Hey all,
I just sent out one of my bi/tri monthly e-mail to the users of my site and I got quite a few bounced back. About 300 our of 2700. I am thinking of a way in which I can limit this. I would like to have an automated system which "suspended or locked" a users account if the mail is not able to go through and gave them a message upon visiting the site that they need to update thier address before they will be able to continue. This process would involve sending an e-mail to the new address to verify it. How on earth though, do I figure out which mail is bounced? Is there something out there I can use to read a folder of messages and grab the bounced address from each one?

Thanks,
Erick

This could be a good MOD... I was actually thinking of doing a similar thing a few weeks ago but don't have the time. If anyone makes something like this I'd be happy to use it !

I was thinking....In a seperate table on the database, generate a random key and hold it there, e-mail the key in a link much like the e-mail verification. Until they get the mail and click the link to remove themselves from the new table, they will not be able to post. Something along these lines I was thinking.

Couldn't the admin have an option to suspend a member and then when they log in :
  • They are redirected to the edit profile page
  • A popup tells them that they need to change email addresses
  • If email validation is on once they change their email they get a validating email
  • If they come back and the key is valid - unsuspend their account !
  • If they don't come back then it can lock their account

That's just the way I'd do it, you might have other plans.

Yea it's a real complicated thing to figure out. As long as they are getting the mail from me and it isn't bouncing, I do not care if they are a member but are not active. At least I can send them e-mail. I don't want to suspend everyone right at once...if you kinda know what I mean.

Yes, once you send their second validation key if they don't response in a few weeks or so you just put their account into suspension.

Since we all want to encourage members to post just warn them about their email but still allow them to browse and post on the forum.
