I tried installing an instance of MSDE 2000 on my home PC last night already running SQL Server 2000. I did everything correct according to the instructions, created an ini file containing the required paramaters (targetdir, instancename, sapwd) and ran setup from the command prompt and it installed fine.
However, when I add it in Enterprise Manager I can connect fine using Windows Authentication but cannot connect using SQL Server authentication. I get the "user sa is not part of the trusted ........" error message.
Any ideas what i'm doing wrong, I uninstalled/re-installed with the same results aswell. |

Isn't there a checkbox there somewhere regarding using trusted connections or not ? maybe it needs to be disabled. Can't say I've ever installed them side by side to be honest.

Setup params in MSDE Maybe I need the "SECURITYMODE=SQL" parameter? Running them side-by-side is not an issue as they are both identical systems, MSDE just has certain limitations. |

Well actually I'm not 100% certain that isn't an issue, I seem to recall reading something recently about multiple instances being ok only if they're both the same version .. I can't recall exactly though, time for some googling I guess. |

We've ran SQL Server 7 and 2000 at work together before, don't think we had any problems with it. Don't forget though that MSDE 2000 and SQL Server 2000 are the same version though.
Reading through the instructions, I think the problem was that I didn't include the Securitymode param, i'll give that a try and see if it works, I can't seem to find anywhere where it can be changed after install though, may have to uninstall/re-install again. |

Didn't think you could run 2000 and 7 together (mind you I think 2000 was probably the first to really have the multiple instances thing going for it). Again though it's something I don't think I ever tried becuase I never had a need to.
An older article seems to back that up http://www.sqlmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=6137 |
