I'm getting a bit worried about the size of my database, almost 300Mb.
Some stats:

Recovery model is "Simple"

Does this seem high?

Regardless, my DB size is 380MB, recovery model is "Simple". You don't appear to be very out of line at all.

This forum is currently 260Mb (clean Snitz, no MODS)

I have a few clients whose databases are approaching 500Mb

it seems high to me David. I am using Simple mode with 130,000+ posts and my DB is under 100 megabytes. I also have a lot of other tables with data going into it from other projects and mods.

btw, archiving won't make the database smaller... but I think you know that.

the mode you use does not affect your database size, it affects your transaction log size.

so do you mean 300Mb including log ? if so how big is the log part.

I viewed the size from the properties after right clicked the database in EM.
And it now say 365Mb?! It was less than 300Mb earlier today

Ok, this is the size of both, if you select the transaction log tab, how much does it say is alocated to your transaction log ?

agreed, but if I may add when you are running nightly backups it will include the database and the logs which is what I look at when I am talking about size. This is why I generally recommend turning logs to simple. I've also seen hosts count the log files towards your database limit.

I looked at the TaskPad view which shows 309.12Mb (Data) 56.3Mb (Log).
That's including free space as the TaskPad shows

56mb is quite large for a log file using simple recovery, how much of it is actually used ?

Ok, you should be able to shrink it then, but unless you are pushed for space I wouldn't bother, it won't have any detrimental effect.

I think you are all refering to the data itself right. Not the logs. Mine if logs are inclusive, it's quite/very huge.

we are referring to both, if your log file is large then it is not set up correctly, if using simple mode, even on a pretty busy forum, if it is backed up daily your log should never be more than 10 to 20Mb

Yes, I agree totally. which is why I also use simple mode for all my clients databases, although I do not count the log file towards the size, it is just more efficient to keep the log as small as possible.
