You can find out more about it at IBM's website: http://www-3.ibm.com/software/data/u2/universe/

And a few manuals as well: http://www-3.ibm.com/software/data/u2/pubs/library/

Is this a database platform to compete against MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle, etc...?

I wouldn't group all those databases together as competiton for Universe. I don't know about Universe but the three you mentioned are not on the same level as each other.

IBM do a database called Unidata which is also part of the U2 platform and I get the impression that it is more for application developers to integrate with their products and sell as a complete package. I don't know if Universe is similar or not.

If you are looking for competition to Oracle or MS SQL Server, try Sybase ASE or IBM DB2.

For competition to MySQL, try PostgreSQL or Firebird (http://firebird.sourceforge.net/).

Thanks for the stats Doug, was wondering about that becuase from what I've seen the likes of DB2 is still getting a pretty good share of the market.

That's because DB2 still runs the best on the mainframe OSes. Oracle has some foothold, but for the most part, DB2 is still the industry leader in that regards.

DB2 has been making good in roads on other platofrms though too I suspect, it's always been strong on the mainframe having started off there I believe, I think we now have DB2 systems on at least 4 different platforms, thats one of the real strengths of it being "open platform"

Whatever happened to Object-Orientated db's? They were the new craze several years ago whilst I was at Uni, but have not heard much since.

I used an OO db called Jasmine! (can't remember who made it)

Computer Associates I believe, We had a customer ask us to use that for some work a few years back and had trouble finding anyone with skill in ODBMS.

I guess OO DBs never achieved a state in which they could be seen as a valid alternative to relational DBs.
