Is there a way to mod snitz to create a special link in a topic that, when clicked on by logged-in users, generates the code to begin downloading a file (for example from HTTP or FTP URL) without the URL of the downloaded file being visible?

I'm guessing a new ASP page, that knows what the download URL is (hardcoded at first / database of public name to private URL later), can be linked to from a topic.

Only the ASP URL is visible when rolling over the link, and with the right code in the ASP file, only registered/logged-in users could start the download.

Also, because the user technically never sees the download URL the average user can't share the download URL with a buddy unless the buddy is registered on the forum.

Make sense?

If any ASP or MOD experts can offer some suggestions/pointers, I'm happy to try to create this mod. I'm a C/C++/VB programmer learning ASP as I type this.

Also, please let me know if there is an easier way to simply hide/protect a download URL in a topic. I didn't find anything while searching the snitz site.

Updated: Phase 2 of this mod would be a useful addition for the admin that would log what users (and their IP and time stamp) have initiated the download by clicking on the link.

Thanks,
robosport

Try the below topic, and read Hamlin's post (7 from the top).

Hmm... This is exactly what I'm looking for, I read Hamlin's post but I have no clue how to implement that into my forum?

Thank you for the response gelliott. Exactly what I needed. Implementing it as a response (binary stream) was a great way to eliminate the URL from the user.

tribaliztic: I did a google on ASP file stream and found this link (and others):
http://authors.aspalliance.com/chrisg/default.asp?article=49

It was enough code to help me through the ASP parts that I was still learning.

Another really useful source of examples is korayem's file sharing mod. Here is a link:
http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=43934

Check out the download.asp page for a great example that also shows a clean implementation for securing the download link only to registered users.

Hope this helps others implement this neat feature with Snitz.

Thanks to all on this forum. Sure is helpful.

Both links in my prevous post have lots of code examples. The first link has a very simply (and well written) code example on it that does the streaming part from an ASP page, even nice comments describing what almost every line does:
http://authors.aspalliance.com/chrisg/tools/view-downloadfile.asp

Are you asking if I have time to package this as a MOD with instructions and all? Not right now, but if there is enough interest I may package it up in a month or two when I free up some time.
