I might do some work on websites for people in the not too distant future, and was wondering what the best way is to get my money. I know I could use PayPal, but are there other good options besides cash/cheques? |

Could use credit card, but will be a costly option compared to cash/cheques.
Whatever you do, don't work on the clients existing code or develop straight to the client's webspace - you'll never get paid.
Always work on your own web server then transfer the work to the client's server on receipt of payment. |

Credit Cards isn't too bad, but you might as well do them via Paypal imo, we use 2Checkout.com at the moment but they sting us 5% + 0.45 per transaction. Setting up our own merchant account shortly which whilst initially will be a little more expensive will give us a lot more flexibility later on. paysystems is supposed to be pretty good too, I'd shift to them from 2checkout right about now (2checkout's service is crap), but the one nice thing I get from 2Checkout is an ATM Card and a US Cheque account to withdraw my fund via. |

I think I'll go see if I still have a paypal account, and if so, I'll use that first. Should those people not want to use their credit cards on Paypal, they can also send me an Amazon.co.uk gift certificate |

You can add money to your paypal account directly from your checking account.

Having gone down various routes in the past - I still use PayPal for a quick solution.
When the amount however goes above $500 USD - I insist that clients wire the money to our company bank account.
No way I am giving the likes of PayPal / 2Checkout / Clickbank 4%-7% of anything big.
PayPal get enough out of me from my ebay auctions anyhow.
Getting your own merchant account set up so you can do all your own processing on your own site is good but most of them I have seen charge you if you do not have a certain volume each month.
Check out Online Data Corp. - they seem to have good one - by all accounts (not used it myself) - where you don't have any of these minimums and others where they do have low rates too.
Example :
Discount Rate : 2.29% Monthly Minimum : $25 Per Auth. Fee : $0.30 Gateway Fee : $19.95 Annual Fee : $99 (waived first year)
I cant remember their url off the top of my head - but all the information is on our ISOOSI web site under Web>>Merchant Services.
My opinion though is stick with PayPal unless it becomes quite high volume or high dollar. JMOT

Thanks for the info Brujo. I don't think it'll happen regularly that I'll need to use something like Paypal, so anything that requires a minimum volume each month or quarter is out of the question. Most people know and trust PayPal, while they might be hesitant with other, less-known companies.
I agree with the wiring of money, but I doubt I'll end up with payments over $250. Also, I don't think I said this, it's something for me "on the side", so all the money I make is great but I won't need the money to survive, therefore I won't mind if Paypal (or another service) takes a percentage of the money |

I dont know about "Online Data Corp" but many places won't accept you if your outside the US which can be frustrating when you see all these good places with good deals and you can't participate. |

Worldpay are always good value, though setup fee's etc are a little on the expensive side. |
