I can't get this the way I want..
I want to have it like this.. "users", "moderators", "admins"
users should have access to most forums, but not all. moderators should have access to all forums, but readonly on some admins should have full access to everything.
What should I set the permissions to? |

admins already have access to all forum, there is no need to create a group for them.
as far as the others, just set up a default user group. for the forums that you want the users to have access, make the forum a allowed member list forum and then you can give that group access or read-only rights. |

Okay, but in the "allowed member list" I have to manually add all new users? (I have translated that text to swedish so I'm not really clear about which setting you are talking about hehe). Is "allowed member list" = all registered users, or is "allowed member list" = only listed members can access? |

no, in the forum properties, you can add the group in the UserGroup Permissions part (if you made all of the modifications correctly). Set the permissions for the group that you want to be able to participate to Allow. Set the permissions for the group that you want to only Read to Read-Only.
The readme file with the mod has pictures to show you how to set these things. |

Yeah, so far I'm with you, but I have some forums that should not be visible, I just set them to "deny" then? I don't use the "built in" security at all?
I did a test on setting a forum to allow all registered users (in the built in security) then "deny" in the usergroups settings. I could access that forum via a direct link to a topic in that forum anyways. |

Deny will only deny those groups. If the forum is set to All Visitors, then people who do not login will still be able to read the posts.
I'm not sure what you mean in your second paragraph, can you explain more. |

The forum is set to "all registered users" (you have to be logged in to see the forum) and "deny" in the usergroups settings, then if a user gets hold of the link to that forum (i.e. http://blaha/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=12/) he can get access anyways. He won't see the forum in the listing on forum.asp, but via a direct link he can access it anyways. I probably have the settings wrong, but if not this is not good =)
I will test this again on my testing forum and come back to you... |

I think I got the hang of it now..
I have most groups set to "listed users, (hidden)" and then I set the permissions in the usergroups settings. Then I have some groups with "all visitors" and "Do not set" in the usergroups settings. This seems to work as i expected. Sorry for taking up your time =) |
