How many people would pay a penny to get 100 days of access to an interesting web page?
That's what I'm going to try and find out. I've signed up as an earner for BITPASS - http://www.bitpass.com and I'm waiting for a response to some technical questions.
BITPASS is supposed to serve the "little guys" who are trying to make a buck on the web (penny in this case), and say that they're aiming at the people who want to make $50,000 to $60,000 on the web. I'd be tickled to death if it'll pay my hosting bill and leave me enough to go hog wild and blow the rest on a Starbucks coffee.
It's supposed to be idiotproof and if that's the case, they've certainly chosen the right person to work with.
wish me luck. |

I'd pay a reasonable amount of money for access to a website, provided the information on it is something I really want to see/read/get. A penny for 100 days of access sure isn't too much |

That does seem interesting, I think I will check it out some more and see what it all entails. |

They've got quite a few choices on the gateway script into their system. PHP script, Perl CGI, Apache mod perl module, and an ASP.NET module. I'm still looking at the ASP.NET module. The last two are supposed to have more config necessary becuase they're more powerful. It could be the ability to use bitpass for dynamic content.
I went to bed early instead of working on my site, so I haven't really read the tech response I got back yesterday.
Building bitpass into a snitz mod will have to wait until I get a handle on how bitpass works and if it can be done or not. I'm not exactly sure my coding skills would be up to the project either.
<update>OUCH! it says the ASP.NET gateway can't gatekeep Classic ASP!</update> Now where did I put that ASP.NET book...
I've got quite a few ideas on where people could use this. The Snitz help/support section is definitely one place. Charge people a penny (maybe 5 cents, 10 cents, or even QUARTER!) to post their help/support problem. If they're not able to pay the penny, they can find a solution by searching the archives. It would save the help moderators time and effort. It would make the job easier and cut down on chances of burnout. It would also cut down on really stupid questions.
However, somebody would be getting income and that means that the government would want to tax it... You'd have to find some way to allow the admins and help moderators posting access without forcing them to pay a penny for it ... I wonder if it would cut down bandwidth costs?... hmm...
Lots of things to think about.

The PHP script requires Apache and PHP 4.1 or better. Can't use Apache with asp, so that's out...
The Perl CGI can't handle dynamic content yet and my web site is DB driven, so that's out...
The Apache mod also requires Apache, so that's out...
The ASP.NET gateway can't handle processing for Classic ASP, so that's out too...
I think I've just used up my options. I guess I'll just have to convert to ASP.NET or wait until the PERL CGI can handle dynamic transactions.

Perhaps you can enter a request for an ASP gateway? Surely you're not the only one who's interested in using their service who's using ASP and can't/would rather not use any of the available gateways at this time...? |

I've already sent in an email asking just that. We'll see if they're able to come up with and Classic ASP version or something that works with DB driven Classic ASP.
I'll keep you informed. |

I've gotten a response back and for DB driven Classic ASP, they suggest using the PHP script even if it says it only supports Apache.
I've got my doubts about this suggestion. I'm actually thinking about starting a project to move to ASP.net and try this again when I'm ready with that...
Now to find out of Gremlin has PHP installed on the Windows servers... |

OK, here we go. Bitpass has asked me if I'd be interested in testing their PHP script with IIS and Classic ASP. I've decided to give it a shot if they can give me the additional support since I know even less about PHP than I do about ASP.
When they said Beta program, they really weren't kidding. Whoo.
Wish me luck folks.

Well Folks,
I've come to the conclusion that Bitpass is not ready for the Classic ASP world. Whatever they're up to right now with static html, php, etc., it just doesn't accomodate ASP well.
If you're using ASP.Net, Php and Aapache, or you've got a lot of PDF / static html served from an Apache web server that you'd like to make money off of, you might want to give them a look. Otherwise, you're better off passing on Bitpass for now.
