It also turns out that you need to add the same edits to pop_profile because of the ability to include images in signatures!
The reason I changed img to xxx is that if I drop the [img] completely, I was concerned that the text would be turned into a clickable url. |

I just checked, and even with the [xxx] the url is clickable. |

Yeah, that's because of the edit_hrefs javascript function at the end of inc_func_common.asp. You could comment it out if you don't want image links to be clickable but that would also mean that people wouldn't be able to post "legitimate" links without using the [url] tag.

Not worth the effort. We already moderate the initial posts of every new member, have the ability to put anyone we want on probation, and have had very few problems as a result. This was more of a user reward issue than anything else. For example, after 1 star, a member gets to post their photo with their profile and messages; after 2 stars, they get a personal photo album; now, after 3, they get to use included images in posts. Something for them to look forward to.
We give out lots of rewards on our forums. There's a monthly challenge every month, and recently, we just started adding colored ribbon icons to the members who earned points in the rewards. It may sound silly, but they all love it!
