Before I start writing this MOD, I thought I should check if anyone else is doing it :
A MOD that keeps (in the cookie) the last (maybe all) usernames used on the user's computer. Although this is not a perfect test, it will highlight where many usernames are used.
I still haven't decided what to do with this info, maybe just email the Admin user is easiest.
So has anyone done this ?, or do I push on ? |

I don't personally recall seeing anything like that before. |

I take it this mod is for checking for the same user having different accounts? unless I misunderstand, If so I would be very interested in this mod, I think the only problem would be is multiple users using the same computer, like internet cafes and places like that. |

You've got it rihgt rasure. This MOD will only alert the Administrator and nothing more. On my site I have valid users on the same IP, then a small group that think it's funny to masquerade as several different people. They are intelligent enough to swap IPs, but I'm hoping they don't think of cookies ... there's really no other way to stop them. |

if they don't log in and use the username & password fields on post.asp, the cookie won't help, will it?
Just a side note: have you thought about privacy issues this might bring up? I don't know how (il)legal it is to use cookies for tracking how many usernames are used on a single computer, especially if you don't notify the users about it in a privacy statement or something like that...
Here's another option, just something that popped in my mind: how about adding a computerID value to the cookie (or perhaps a second cookie, set to expire after a year or so, that gets renewed each time a user posts?), and then having that added to the database with each post that's made? You could then sort posts by computerID and check if they're all made with the same account or not. If not, check if the writing style is similar to get clues as to whether or not it might be the same person using multiple usernames. Also, disableing access to post.asp and post_info.asp for non-members would be a good idea so no posts can be made without logging in first. Of course it's not fool-proof since a new computerID would have to be assigned each time a new cookie is written if there wasn't one already, so it won't be accurate if cookies get deleted regularly. |

We encourage everyone to login (member only forums ) Yes, not 100% effective, but it will trap the members I want to trap

But don't we track usernames in cookies now ?? What difference is it storing ALL usernames rather than the last one used ?

Isn't this just a different method of the same MOD I'm describing ?

Any more info on this mod laser? actually thinking about it what about just using a simple cookie to prevent already registered members from accessing the register page, actually thinking about it again defeats the object for those who legitimately share PC`s |

No progress sorry, the 'problem' members I have/had usually expose themselves or let the secreat out after a while. They can't keep up the farce for long enough without telling someone else |
