Hey Guys,
I'm doing a bit of practise at home creating a LAN network. I baught a 5-port switch and some cables yesterday and have 3 computers. I was going to make one computer a server and the rest clients. But do I HAVE to have a Server Operating System in the server computer to do this? I have access to Windows 95, 98 and XP. Or can I use XP as a server? Or can i download something to make it a server?
Any help would be good.

just set up each of the computers to be in the same workgroup. none of the computers will be a true server, but you can share files between computers.

I'd just like to let you know that getting 95/98 to Network with XP over TCP/IP(or 2000/2003) is really hard. I'd try to go with 9x, or 2k/XP if you can - and not mix.

I've never had a problem with a hybrid OS Network. What kind of problems were you experiencing?

I have several portables running XP and two desktops, one running 98 and another XP Pro and never had a problem accessing resources over the LAN, or any other problem for that matter.

File sharing never worked. Sure they can access the Internet, and the server (if you run a server on one), but never could get file sharing between them. I hear it's the higher security in 2k/XP+

Yeh i have found it difficult to do file sharing with a XP comp and a 98 comp just being peer to peer. It can share printers and internet easy but it was a mongral getting the file sharing to work but it did work.

What my aim was to have 2 computers on XP and one on 98.

It's all about security and the 'permissions list'.

To get Windows 95/98/Me to connect peer-peer to 2000/XP, you'll need to login to each 95/98/Me machine with an account and password that is already set up with the XP/2000 machine. This is because XP/2000 won't just let anyone access files (even if they are fully shared) - it needs to know that they have been pre-allowed access by its administrator(s). In this case the permissions list is stored in the Windows XP/2000 system.

If you're running a small domain, then the same is true, but the permissions list is stored on the primary server (known as the Domain Controller.)

The guest account was really designed for this use particularly if your on a closed private network, it's just usually disabled by default.

True, but it's a bit of a 'haven' for security bugs though.

Oh yeah for sure, best for closed networks as I said, but can also be useful in a pinch when you just need to get something off a machine one time and don't really need to setup a user account permanently.
