I know someone from a chat who lives in NY state. When I did a trace on his email address using eMailTrackerPro and then on his IP address using VisualRoute, it returned Miami, Fl. as the location. That guy works with a phone company that has several offices throughout the US, so my first thought would be a large WAN for the entire corp, but I know very little about LAN/WAN techniques...
Are traces so unreliable that they can give results that far off, or can there be other reasons for this unexpected result? |

I'm in California, but if you traced most of my mail addresses back to the server you'd get Arizona. You are only finding out where his email server is, not where the email user is.

Bingo, if you traced some of mine you'd get Florida as well, though I'm clearly still sitting in NZ :) |

Aha. That explains why most traces are right and show the correct city, while most, if not all traces to IP addresses in the Netherlands stop in Amsterdam. Thanks guys |
