It really depends. It depends on what your employer and/or client uses or allows. What kind of application you're looking for and what's available.

I can't speak on comparing .NET and PHP, but comparing classic ASP to PHP, PHP wins hands down in my book. PHP has so many built-in functions and is so versatile compared to classic ASP. There are many things which you had to purchase a component or write your own component for ASP where in PHP it's been built-in or available for quite awhile.

Ask me which I use the majority of time at work and I'll answer 'ASP'. We're a MS shop. I would love to use more PHP, but it's not my decision. If it had been up to me, I would have gone for PHP. I started programming in Perl many years ago. When I started at the company I've been at for the past 5+ years, we were using Macs, LASSO and Perl for the web. After about a year or so of working there, the dept came under a new manager who had it in his mind to totally phase out the Macs and replace them with PC's, IIS and ASP. It's a good company, I loved working here and didn't want to quit. So I took up the challenge to learn IIS, ASP and SQL Server. It's been fun, I've learned a lot and I enjoy the work.

Anyways, I have managed to get them to use one PHP application in the production environment -- phpadsnew for our ad server . IMHO, there's just nothing else that comes close to phpadsnew. Having a successful PHP application running and being a revenue stream, I think it really gets on the nerves of our hardcore M$ programmers .

All that aside, I guess it comes down to this...

Whichever you decide to use, have fun with it! Don't be afraid to try new things, you may be surprised at what you learn. The more you know, the better programmer you'll be. The more languages you're familiar with, the more versatile you'll be. And most importantly... it's not the language that makes a project successful, it's the people behind it.

I wish more people would understand that last statement. Right now there are people who think that any application written in .NET is gold.
