It was done that way, because icq servers sometimes took really long to show the icons, which slowed down the loading of the pages. When you have a lot of users on your forum, for every topic each user reads, your server requests the icq icon. That can lead up to 1000's if not more, hits per day to icq servers. Can you imagine 100's of other snitz forums doing the same thing? Sometimes the icq servers can't handle the traffic and don't display the icon at all. So you get a broken image all over your forum.
So we made the icq icon static, so the topic loads quicker. Only when clicking on the icq icon it will get the online status of the user.
