Hi

Some members on my forum aren't very keen on ranks/stars/post counts, and would prefer for them not to be there...

If I was to turn off ranks and stars in 'ranking config' would this get rid of post counts aswell? Plus, if this did get rid of them, would they still count post counts, so if I was to turn them back on in the future, the counts would be correct?

If this doesn't happen, does anyone know of a mod to do this?

Thanks

You can't hide the post counts unless you make changes to the files (topic.asp, members.asp, profile.asp to name some). But yes, if you were to hide them, the posts would still get counted and the correct values would be shown if you were to show the post counts again. That is, of course, if you don't set your forums to not increment post counts

It's weird how some people like 'em and some people hate 'em.

I have one board that likes them. They even discussed and picked out the member names and had fun with it. On the other hand, one of our boards, the people don't really care for them. They feel that they're distracting and gives too much credit to people who are chatty but may not be experts, while the experts may not say much but when they do it's important. I guess you can't please everyone.

Too true! The people on mine say it just causes competition...which I suppose it does!

If I wanted to make post counts hidden when I turned off ranks and stars, what code would I need to implement into the forums? Would you be able to give me some pointers please (taking into consideration that I still want them counting while hidden )

Thats true.

mortioli,
You can turn off stars in the ranking config then name all the rank fields Member then you can pass out individual titles to the true experts if you wish.
You wont hide the post count however.

For topic.asp just look for the following two lines and comment them out (remember that you might have to change the Response.Write and & vbNewLine & _ parts):
line 587
			Response.Write	" <font color=""" & strForumFontColor & """ face=""" & strDefaultFontFace & """ size=""" & strFooterFontSize & """><small>" & Reply_MemberPosts & " Posts</small></font></p></td>" & vbNewLine & _

line 792
	Response.Write	" <font color=""" & strForumFontColor & """ face=""" & strDefaultFontFace & """ size=""" & strFooterFontSize & """><small>" & Member_Posts & " Posts</small></font></p></td>" & vbNewLine & _

Members.asp is more complicated because you have to make quite some changes to hide the empty cell. But perhaps if topic.asp is the main (or only) place people complain about, you can leave members.asp alone?

Hmm, suppose so, but I was thinking along the lines of making it so it's not hard coded to switch them on and off...instead, have them so they switch on and off with hiding the rank and stars...

Then add a field to the configuration table in the database, modify the ranking page to include both two radio buttons and the submittal codes and then make changes to the lines I showed to either show or hide those lines depending on the value in the database (remember to also grab the info in the SQL statement(s))
