This is probably already been commented like hundres of ather places around in this community forum :p

I am a PHPbb fan, with asp coding as a living. PHPbb is a free forum like this only it runs on php, and not asp. There are interfaces that can have php run on windows, but I'd prefer to install snitz forum on windows and use ms sql.

The reason I am withholding my enthusiasm for Snitz is the design and graphics. They are "kindly spoken" bad. Yes, this is my personal opinion, but I think the icons are boring and some even ugly. The design is very boring with very little graphics. Sure it exploits the bandwidth better, but I cant get myself to use it if its not good lucking regardless.

Yes, "there are mods and skins" and "code is open so change it yourself", etc... I agree. But I honesltly think its a point in itself to have the initial forum look good. The first installation. I hope for the next version to have preferably unique, good looking icons and design on installation. And try avoid just using the xp-icons. They are nice, but lack originality.

This is my honest opinion. No offense to anyone.

And I mentioned PHPbb for comparison only. I think they made some steps in the right direction.

Let me just also add that I think Snitz has my highest respect for sharing the application open source just like PHPbb!! Makes me wanna contribute to the project :D

I think the core theory here at Snitz is a combination of simplicity and compatibility. Many of the most popular sites (Google for one) are chucking out all they're fancy layouts and graphics in a return to a simpler, faster-loading site. In my own experience, the graphical presentation of a forum has very little effect on its popularity/usage and in some cases can cause confusion that might discourage less experienced users. The 'standard' nature of the layout and code also offer enhanced compatibility with the array of browsers out there today.

BTW, How do you make a living from ASP coding? I've been trying for months with very little success (and some burnt fingers!)

Thanks for the heads up about PHPbb. I've been wanting to pick up PHP and it might be just the introduction I'm looking for (I picked up the majority of my ASP knowledge working with Snitz code.)

Well, you're right about some sites pushing out a load of graphics making the interface harder to grasp at first sight. But I still believe it is quite possible to design nice and good looking pages and still keep them userfriendly. And I understand the argument about Snitz loading faster without to much graphics. But with the size of this community there should be some people who could help the dev-team behind Snitz to enhance the forum basic "look and feel" a couple of notches ;)

And how to make ASP for a living:
Go to school and learn software development, how to run and be part of project, design databases, understand project economy, etc... the basics. Then apply for a job. You might get lucky!

Hehe, not much chance of getting a job in ASP anywhere near where I live. Out here, in the 'sticks' of the UK, computers and the Internet are like 'evil voodoo technology' - Might as well be an ice-sculpter in the desert.
