The sign on the door said this was the place to make MOD suggestions.

So, how about an addition to the Forum that would alert the Admin if two users log on with the same IP?

Perhaps flexible enough to prevent it alltogether, or, offer varying degrees of Admin control??

Just thought it might come in handy.

Any thoughts on this?

Lots of users may have the same IP if they are on the same network. I would caution against preventing it altogether.

Thanks for the reply, Nikkol. I wonder, would they all have the exact same IP? And, if so, that is another reason I have been requesting a Mod that would allow an Admin or Moderator to block certain users from specific forums without using the IP Gate.
If they would not have the exact same IP, then, what would it hurt?

If the mod would only alert the Admin of the existing situation, that would be a great help in controlling one's forum. Thanks!

I do appreciate all the insight I can get on this.

well, for instance, at work, everyone has the same IP because we use a proxy server. So, if you blocked that IP, no one from my work would be able to get in.

Yes, I see. That would present a problem for me. However, I still think it would be neat to be notified of multiple accounts with the same IP. Perhaps a pop-up when the Admin logs on, or a simple e-mail alert... Hmmm...

Alot of people are on proxy servers.....Take AOL for example.....Most all the AOL users in my forum come up with the same IP & there is not a way I know of to distinguish them.

I have something similar to this MOD request on my "to do" list [you should see how long it is ], but using cookies. It will work by storing the "last login" user name on the machine itself (hence it will work better than duplicate IPs), and notify the Admin/etc if the user name changes.

Maybe an 'ignore' function could be added when you KNOW that 2 people use the same machine.

On SI forums a member made a program to find out if one user has more then one account, the IP address did little work with this.

The program scans all things like spelling, grammar and so on to see if they are the same members.

I wrote something for 3.3 ages ago that showed IP's addr's in common between members, just changing the includes at the top of the page to match the 3.4 standard should make it compatibile with the latest Snitz version, its pretty crude, but it helps a little when trying to weed out duplicate members.
