Let me apologize if this has been asked before, but is there a reason Snitz uses a stateless image for the Yahoo Messenger image, instead of:

<img src=http://opi.yahoo.com/online?u=<%=insert_Yahoo_username_here%>&m=g&t=0>

That returns a little smiley face that's yellow and smiling if user is online, and grey and frowning if offline. Same size as the stateless image used on Snitz now.

I forgot the exact code for to returning the handle, but you see what I'm saying. Mainly I'm curious if that code just isn't well known, or if there is something bad about using Yahoo Messenger status?

PS. I still haven't figured out any way that AIM returns status images. But if anyone else does, please shoot me an email.

If they had something other than just that little face, I'm sure it would be used. I have used it and placed the little face right next to the current image.

you can see it here: http://www.realftp.com/richardk/testforumone/link.asp?TOPIC_ID=3

look at the first reply in that post (the server is kinda slow and you get a network is busy error sometimes, just refresh and it should load.

It's also possible using asptear or other means to use the text based reply that Yahoo returns and then test for if the user is online or offline and then show a custom icon.

I had it working on my home server using asptear and I made a Yellow blinking Yahoo icon for when the user is online and a grey Yahoo icon for when they were offline. But it slows the page down when it has to access the Yahoo servers for each person. We already have the ICQ status, and when ICQ is down or slow the pages load slow. That's why I took the Yahoo status off of my home server, because it would slow the forum down.

True, but if you include a height= and width= in the <img tag, won't the page load fine, and then the image gets filled in when it can? I know the status bar won't show as Done until the image is received, but the page should render before the image is shown.

I'll try that out on my own site some time tonight and tell you what kind of results I get.

I've added it to my site. As long as you specify a height and width, the page renders in the same amount of time. You see the image appear a couple seconds later, but it has no effect on the overall performance of the page.

Well, just a thought.

Now, if I can just figure out if AIM has the same status support.
