Crew:

I've a W2K Pro (Intel P4, 2.66Mhz, 80GBHDD, 1GB RAM) at home configured with IIS5. I'm able to access my forum over the Internet via cable/modem. (http://24-90-172-116.nj.rr.com/)

Two things that I'm working on are:

1. getting MP3 to play on my system. I get the message "...required plugin cannot be found..." when playing from my SOTW component. My PC is spruced up and patched up to the hilt (with WMP9 installed).

2. setup IMAIL (CDONTS?) as my primary mail server and get it to work with Snitz. I get "... cannot relay email..." when testing externally (sent from a Yahoo addy) even though SMTP (and all required protocols) is enabled and configured with my machine's fully-qualified DNS name.

Any thoughts/guidance on any of the above are mostly welcome and appreciated.

regards,

Padawan

You need to configure your server to allow relaying. What is IMAIL? Is it an external email server you installed?

Which ideally you never actually want to just do without employing some form of authentication, either POP before SMTP or SMTP Authentication.

IMAIL is the ipSwitch server isn't it ? I haven't used that one for ages and ages, but i'm pretty sure there was a number of relaying options in one of the configuration screens, look for something like "Realy for Local Hosts" and then make sure the from address of any emails you are sending have a domain name that is hosted by the server. This isn't ideal though becuase anyone can work out what domains are hosted and use it for spamming by just sending their emails with a valid from domain.

If it supports SMTP Authentication then I'd go with that option, just means you have to enter your POP3 userid and password whenever you want to send email via that server, almost all email clients (and most webmail clients) support doing this.

RUIRIB and GREMLIN,

Thanks for the heads up! I actually did last night what both of you are suggesting and got my email woes straightened out.

I also fixed my "plugin" problem (not able to play MP3 in Snitz) by uninstalling Quicktime.

thanks a bundle and best regards,

padawan

Hi.

I have one of my forums running on an external server (ISP) which uses iMail (Ipswitch). How do I set up Snitz Forums to use that eMail server? There is no alternative in the eMail setup in the Admin section... Any ideas?

You just need to type the adress of the server in the email server configuration part of the admin options. You can use whatever email component you wish, one thing is not related to the other.

Thanx.

I normally use another ISP for my forums and everything works fine there (Telenor, www.telenor.no). Now I am testing a new ISP and my first problem is that the forum does not send email (I know how to set up this thing). I figured out that they use iMail (Ipswithch) as SMTP server.

My first question was if Snitz Forums automatically supports iMail from Ipswitch (I can not select iMail as email system in Email Server Configuration in Admin section in the forum). The only alternatives is: ASPEMail, CDONTS (IIS 3/4/5), Chili!Mail, CDOSYS (IIS 5/5.1/6) and SA-Smtp Mail. When I open the inc_mail.asp file there is NO section for iMail...

My second question was if the ISP has to do something special in their setup to support a Snitz Forum (relaying, support for outside domain email and so on). My forum admin email is an address outside the domain where my forum runs.

Snitz does not support email servers, just email components. All servers support protocols to receive email from somewhere (namely SMTP). That's all that is required. The email componentes will use the protocol to communicate with whatever server you specify.

Yes, you may need to talk to your host about allowing relaying from your site's domain.
