I'm not sure if this has been posted or discussed before, but I did a quick search and it didn't appear to have been, so I thought I'd suggest it.
One of the key reasons that I don't want to enable Subscriptions, especially to the category / board level is the amount of spammy emails that users receive, especially if the board is reasonably active. Users can literally receive lots and lots of emails a day. My idea would be to change the subscriptions system so that you would receive an email informing you of a reply to XXX topic, but that it would say "There may be more then one reply to the topic, but you will not receive further notifications about this topic until you visit the board again". I believe this has been implemented in another forum system (I think that VBulletin has it), and this would stop the "spam" and make people far more willing to use subscriptions. My users want to be subscribed to stay in touch, they just dont want to receive hundreds of emails from my board, nor do I want the strain on the email server of all these emails.
I can't see it would be too difficult a mod to write - couldn't you set a value in the table of subscriptions to 1 as and when a subscription email is sent out for the category / board / topic, and then only send to those people that the value was 0? Then whenever they revisited the board, they would have all the values for their subscriptions reset to zero, so they would receive subscription emails again. Is this a possible solution for a mod? I might have a go at writing this myself at some point, but I wanted to see whether you people thought this would be a useful mod / a good idea, or whether there would be some problem (eg. much reduced performance) that I havn't thought of.

Oh ok, I didn't find that when I searched for it Nikkol thanks . Is there any news on this, or is it still being developed? I might have a go at one myself if it hasn't been released yet. I think the above code outline would work, but does anyone see any potential problems? |

No telling until you try it! Just make sure to make backup copies of any files you modify. Also, you might want to try it in a test forum rather than your live forum. You could always select a few of your members to help you test it. |
