ok thanks people.

i gave the job of installing it to a tech-support guy last time cos he looked after the server; now it looks like i can do it myself.

so to conclude: once you know the server runs asp (and Access?), all you have to do is dump all the snitz files into a folder and run Setup? and that's it? (yay!)

just make sure to make the changes to config.asp as appropriate.

do you mean pointing it to the relevant page/url?

- you do that in Admin Options, right?

no, i admit that i did not. i assumed that it was too complicated for me, and required you to mess about on the server. still looks a bit intimidating.

but basically you unzip, ftp, run setup, then mess with the config file?

one other thing: if i do all of this in a read/write folder (password protected ftp), could anyone get into the database from the web?

you have to edit the config.asp file before running setup.

the best thing to do is have a folder for you database that is not accessible from the web and then another folder for forum files on the web with the typical web permissions.

ok I've created a folder and ftp'd all the files, after first altering config.asp to what i thought was correct.

theres something wrong, because after the admin/password prompt and "Installation of forum-tables in the database" i get 13 error messages telling me the installation is not complete. this is out of my depth.

do i have to create and upload an access database, or is it there included already? if so, i guess there's an error in my config.asp?

- i ran the whereami asp script and it worked, ie identified the physical path.

when i enter the URL i get this:

"ADODB.Field error '800a0bcd'

Either BOF or EOF is True, or the current record has been deleted. Requested operation requires a current record.

/forum_2/Default.asp, line 95
"

Don't enter the URL. The 13 errors you got mean that the folder where you placed the DB does not have read/write permissions for the anonymous internet user. You'll need to contact your host to fix that. This post has further info:

hmm ok. in which case, if i put the database file into the first folder i used - which has a fully operative forum - would it work then?

- i guess it would. so the relevant question is more likely ot be: will it cause any conflict with the other forum, running off the other db? ie: two db.s in the same folder, one of which relates to another directory.

should not conflict. is the first database in the same folder as the first forum's asp files?

yes it is, and that forum is working perfectly.

i don't understand this read/write problem however, because i can ftp to the other folder. i therefore assume that is not the same thing - which i did not realise.

you can ftp because you have a username and password to get in that way. just a regular person browsing on the Internet does not have the username and password, meaning they will get an error if they try to update the database (by posting for example). So, the folder that contains the database has to have read/write permissions for regular surfers.

ok i'm getting more confused now.

i have installed all the files in two sections of the server, one inside the existing "forum" folder and one next to it, where i have ftp access. in both cases i continue to get the 13 error messages etc.

i assume inside the existing "forum" folder i have read/write access.

if you want to email me your ftp login information. I can try to set it up for you. I'll then tell you what I did so that you know for future reference.
