I have noticed that the forums here when you click on send the user a email, there is an inbuilt system for sending mail. However over at my site, it will open up the default email program after clicking on the email address.
Do you have email mode turned on or off? Admin Options >> E-mail Server Configuration >> Set to Off - Your default email program will be load when you click the mail to link.
Admin Options >> E-mail Server Configuration >> Set to On - The forum will send the email for you.
