Okay, I set up a forum using NT auth. Then, I changed my name after it was installed. So, now the forum isn't logging me in automatically. I deleted all my cookies and it still isn't letting me in ... it's asking me to register. Any ideas? |

I have an idea, how about registering?
I'm kidding. But what did you change? The NT Account name? Or your username?
Can't be the username as the option to edit or modify the username is un-available. If you changed your nt account name, then you will have to log in from that NT Account name, to access the account again.
Or modify your M_USERNAME in your database back to what you had before. |

no, it wasn't my NT name ... I went to the members page and clicked the edit icon for my name and there I was able to change the username. But then I couldn't log in.
I did modify the database to get back in, but why can't I change the name? |

Nikkol, I tried both places, I went into my profile, and also used the members.asp page to edit my account. I could not edit my forum username. The option to edit my forum username was not available. If I edit another users account, I am allowed to change thier username. But not my own.
The only way to change your username is if you log in as another admin, change that admin as the super admin, then edit your previous account. Then log out, and log back in using your new username.
I tried and changed my NT Account name, by going to members.asp page and editing my account, and then after I submitted that, it said I needed to register, and I was no longer logged in. Had to change my M_USERNAME back to what it was before. |

That sounds like exactly what happened to me. Is this a possible bug? If not, why is there an option to edit it? |

NT Authentication is tied to the NT account name that you are logged into your computer with. If you change the username in the forum, then you need to logout of NT and then log back in with the username that you changed it too.
The username in the forum must match the NT Account that you are logged in with.
At least that is my understanding. I have never used NT Authentication. |

I would guess, the option is there in case you want to assign your forum account to another NT account.
I wouldn't consider it a bug, as I see some usefulness of it. And since NT Auth users aren't complaining about it. |

Alright, I registered under a different nt account. When I registered, it showed Your Account as my nt name. I was allowed to select a User Name which I made different from the nt name. It worked.
Then, I logged in as admin and edited the new user's User Name to be something else. That worked. And I was able to log in as that user using the user's nt name.
So my question is, why can't I change my own User Name? |

No, it shows NT Account Name (Forum Username) in the upper right hand corner. If your NT Account name is Nikkol, and your forum username is Nikkol you will see Nikkol (Nikkol).
My NT Account name is David and Davio is what I registered as on the forum. It shows David (Davio) for me.
I don't know about your other question. I will have to test it to see what you're talking about. But you're reeeeally trying hard to prove there is a bug with it, aren't you? lol |

Nikkol, the same way you edited the new users username, the same way you can edit yours. That's how it is using DB Authentication too.
Logout from your NT Account (or switch accounts. XP has this feature of switching between accounts, but still keeping the account logged in.) Lets call it Nikkol1. Log in with another NT account. Nikkol2. Register Nikkol2 on the forum. Logout from the Nikkol2 account. Log back in to Nikkol1 account. Edit Nikkol2's profile on the forum and make the account an Admin. Edit your config.asp file, to make Nikkol2's account the superadmin. Logout of Nikkol1's account. Log back in as Nikkol2. You should admin rights now. Edit Nikkol1's profile. You should be able to change Nikkol1's username now.
And that's how you change your username. Or you can just change it in the database.
The default admin username was never meant to be changed. That's why in the setup of the forum, we allowed users to name the admin account before the forum is setup. So they wouldn't have to use the default Admin username. |
