I just caught this story concerning Microsoft and it's SQL server products, might be interesting reading for some of you.
There is a companion piece from The Register, here.
Seems quite bizarre to me. |

Can anyone translate the legalese into English again? What exactly does this mean to 'Joe' developer out there?
Is this gonna effect businesses specifically selling SQL server services, or anyone writing for/using the system? |

A lot of it appears to be releated to the OLAP / Analysis Services part of rather than the main database part. |

I don't understand all the legal things either, it basically seems to say that if you develop a product or add on which relies on the microsoft product (and maybe others?), and then sell / lease it to another (your own customer) (data warehouse solutions, OLAP / Analysis as pweighill comment) then you need to be working with Timeline, and not Microsoft.
Has anyone found any real examples of who this may affect?
D3mon, I guess the actual issue needs to be explained better, maybe something will be posted on the timeline site (http://www.tmln.com/) but at the moment, the site seems to be broken. |

it only affects applications which encorporate or use
the analyst services cube, which is a database within SQL Server, and DTS (data transformation services), a way to bring data into the relational database side of SQL.
This does not mean that you can't use them just that you could not use the cube or built DTS in to your application, it will not affect that many people |
