Hi All,
I'm building a new site and I just wanted to ask everyone what screen resolutions you build your site for?
Right now, I'm building my pages for 800x600 screen resolution, but it seems really small to me when I look at it at my monitor's 1024x728 resolution. Does anyone besides my parents' Win95 PC even use this resolution anymore?

I build my sites for 800x600. My screen res is 1280x1024 and 1024x768 (dual monitors) and I have another computer that I have setup as 8x6 so I can preview what I'm doing. Most people that I've seen around work and other places have it set at 8x6. |

Out of my sites, with the statistics I have collected there are still more people using 800x600 resolution, but 1280x768 is catching up quick. I particularily design for these two main screen resolutions. Most of my sites can hanlde anything above 800x600 as I make them form to the screen size. 640x480 does not look pretty though. |

A lot of older (more than 12 months) laptops also only use 800x600, plus don't forget even if the res is 800x600 your page can only be about 770 x 550 to allow for IE's huge menus.
but yes, they look very small at 1280x1024 which is what i run my monitors at. |

I always make sure sites work on 800x600, but use 1600x1200 myself. |

I've played with the stretchy designs, but my main image starts to look out of place when the resolutions get larger.
I suppose I'll stick with the 8x6 design, but it looks awfully lonely with all of that white space off to the right.

IE might have large toolbars, but Mozilla and Netscape have a sidebar that a lot of people don't turn off, even when it's minimized it takes in a lot of room. According to Macromedia Dreamweaver you should assume a maximum display space (without scrolling) on 800x600 of 760x420 although I like some extra space and when I make fixed-width sites I use a maximum width of 740px |

Generally design for 800x600 but prefer designing for 1024x768. I have a tripple screen setup where I have each screen running at a different res so I can easily see how things look, one at 800x600 one at 1024x768 and one at 1280x1024 |

I'm running a poll on my forums to see who uses what screensize.
This is the current standing:
After 115 votes:
Lower than 640*480 (0.0%) 0 votes 640*480 (7.0%) 8 votes 800*600 (33.0%) 38 votes 1024*768 (39.1%) 45 votes 1280*1024 (13.0%) 15 votes 1600*1200 (1.7%) 2 votes Higher than 1600*1200 (6.1%) 7 votes
I'd say that 33% is high enough to still warrant building sites in 800*600, however annoying that may be. |

Normally, I optimize my sites for 800x600, but it depends on the target group. Personally, I use 1024 and 1280. |

Reading some of the replies to my poll, I was surprised how many people had no idea what screen res they were in. If they knew how to change it, I wonder how many would up the resolution? The icons on my desktop alone take up more room than a 800*600 res could display! |

Lately we have been building for 1024x768 but the customer has specified this. This is the new recommended minumum apparently. I used to do 800x600. |
