I just got back from an installation banquet for my barbershop chorus where they swear in the board members and officers for the upcoming year. Another part of the festivities for the evening is the honoring of the member deemed to have made an outstanding impact on the chapter over the past year by naming them Barbershopper of the Year (BOTY). They always do a biography of the person, usually changing a fact or two before announcing who it was. I've guessed the BOTY the past eight years, and I was sure I knew who it was going to be. Well, they're reading this guy's bio and I'm sitting there thinking to myself, "wow, this guy and I have a LOT in common!" Well, they get a little further and I realized that they were talking about ME!! Sure enough, when they announced the name of the BOTY, they called my name.
Well, color me speechless. For probably one of the few times in my life, I had nothing come to my mind when I was asked to speak. I was simply in shock because number one, I was sure it was someone else, and number two, my wife AND my quartet members had kept it a secret from me for over a MONTH (and I'm not usually snowed that easy).
I do my work for the chorus because it's what I love to do and don't consider it work, but it's always nice to be recognized by your peers.
OK, I just had to get that off my chest....back to your regularly scheduled Snitz surfing! |

That's really great, Dave. Now are you going to provide an MP3 file and show us what your group sounds like?

I never turn down a chance to show off my group . We've been ranked in the top 30 choruses (out of 1500+) in the world the past six years running, having ranked as high as 18th. All this with no audition process or tryouts before performances. We're a true "joe barbershopper" chorus.
Here's a couple mp3 links to listen to: Ain't Misbehavin: www.keystonecapitalchorus.org/mp3/aintmisbehavin.mp3 This is the Moment(soloist is our director):www.keystonecapitalchorus.org/mp3/thisisthemoment.mp3 |

That's great, Dave. I've sang in a capella quartets since I was about sixteen. I like to sing the basso profundo part. I have a S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A book of Christmas songs and four of us from our church sang one at a Christmas banquet and Kirk Cameron was there and sat right in the front. I used to listen to a lot of these three groups: Acappella, Acappella Vocal Band, and Glad.
I'm about two hours north of Harrisburg, maybe I'll come down sometime when you have a big concert. |

Our annual show is May 2-3 at the Hershey Theatre. We're doing a tribute to Frank Sinatra, so we've got a bunch of good music coming up. Our guest quartet is an acappella quartet that sings outside the Beauty and the Beast show at Disney so they should be pretty good. Mostly Do-Wop, but a two-time gold medalist sings with them, so they should be be pretty entertaining. |
