| Now that I got XP Pro, I have installed IIS. Since iis doesn't display an icon when the server is started (like PWS on win 98) I checked the services that were running when started the computer. I notice inetinfo.exe was one of them. Is there anyway to tell IIS to not automatically start up when windows is started? I'm only going to be using the web server for development. Don't like having my port 80 open without my knowledge. Who knows what might try to access it. (Haven't gotten comfortable with XP yet.) |

Nikkol, now I wouldn't have a clue what you were talking about, but by some chance I doing a search on google about one of these services that is running on xp. And I came to a site that pointed me to a program (services,msc) that lists all the services that are running. So I figured out what you are saying. 
I see WWW Publishing and IISAdmin, both set to automatic. Do i need to set IISAdmin to manual too?
Also I see a Log On tab that allows you to specify which account you want to the service to log on with. Could I specify my account so it will only logon using my account? I have multiple accounts on this computer and don't need it to start when the other users log on. |

I have found that if you change the user account to start the service, then the service plays up big time. As a matter of fact, we changed it once on a server and had to reinstall IIS it was that bad.. Just a bit of FYI...

lol, I have lots of indepth knowledge about previous versions of windows. And only a little knowledge about XP. So I am on a learning path.

Don't think so, that just controls the user account the service runs under.
All services will start up automatically with the machine unless changed.
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
Once in there use the properties tab for the service you want to change and you can update the service type between Automatic, manual, disabled etc. |

No I'm not disabling them Gremlin. Just don't want them to start up when windows start. So I am setting them to manual, which I believe allows me to manually turn them on when I need it.
I'll leave it (IISAdmin service) set to automatic for now and keep WWW Publishin service set to manual. |

Davio, you should be able to get the same interface that you had with PWS, you just have to install it from the Add/Remove Programs. (and you can have it show the Icon in the Tray as well, where you can start and stop the service like you are accustomed to)

I copied the pws.exe file from a Windows 2000 Pro machine and tried it on my Windows XP Pro machine and it works, but you don't get the tray icon though (the option to show the icon in the tray is grayed out). |

When I started using IIS locally I had set to start manually. The only service that started manually then was the www publishing service. The IIS admin service doesn't open any ports, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. It will only give you more work whenever you want to have IIS running.
After a while, since I use ZoneAlarm Pro, and I configured ZA just to allow access to the web server from my local network, I stopped worrying about it. Now my www publishing service is configured to start automatically. |

Thanks guys. I got it how I wanted it now.
One minor problem though, when I open IIS and click the button to Start the web server, it takes some seconds (around 15 seconds) then an error comes up telling me the server did not start in a timely fashion. After clicking ok, I clicked the "Start" button again and it starts instantly. Just wondering why it won't start in a "timely fashion" when I first click the start web server button. |
