I just got a registration from somebody who says she's twelve years old. And some of the info she's posted looks a little... uh, risque?
What's the safe thing to do? Am I obligated to lock the account? |

I email the member to double-check their age, explaining that when they joined, they were stating that they were 13 or older. I reference the COPPA material which explains why I don't accept memberships from under 13. If they respond that they are in fact 13 or older, I ask them to correct their profile. If they are under 13, I explain that I must delete any personally identifiable information (age, name, etc.) from their profile and I either lock or delete their account (their choice). I tell them that they are always welcome to read our forums, and when they turn 13, I'll unlock their account (if applicable) or they can sign up then.
Keep in mind that kids (or adults) can lie about their age. Nothing you or I can do about that to verify someone's real age other than asking. You have to trust that they tell the truth. |

Good tips, Jeff. I've played it safe by deleting all personal info and sending them emails. Thanks for your input. |
