Okay, I've finally gotten to the point that I've got to think about moderators, and I'm wondering where I can create a forum for us to talk about unruly members, posts made incorrectly, etc. I tried to create a hidden Category, but there seems to be no such option, so I'm assuming I'm to do this by creating a hidden forum under an existing Category. If I'm wrong, please correct me.
Also, I'm wondering if anybody can offer any useful advice about pitfalls to avoid, etc. Like "don't put your Moderators forum in a Category with a lot of forums!"
Thanks in advance, gals and guys! |

I created my Hidden Admins and Moderators forum under my first category which is Forum News. Under that category I have two other Locked forums, News and Forum Rulez. So there is no user activity in that first category except by admins and moderators...And those guys always like to be able to see their forum without scrolling down the page. |

a category is hidden if all of the forums in that category are hidden. So, just create a new Category and then add a hidden forum in it. |

Here's how I've got it structured on my site (www.intelogic.net): Category: Important Announcements - Forum: Important Announcements (Locked with three moderators to allow them to post) - Forum: Polls (open to all) Category: Main Forums - Forums: Various. Open to all. Category: Other Forums - Forums: Various. Open to all. Category: Restricted Access Forums - Forum: Mod/Admin Room (Hidden, Member List containing only Mods and Admins) - Forum: Administrators Only (Hidden, Member List containing only Admins) - Forum: Visiting Mod Room (Hidden, Member List containing Mods, Admins and Visiting Mods) - Forum: Financial Info (Hidden, Member List containing selected individuals) - etc...
The forum you refer to (ie: to talk shop) is the Mod/Admin Room and the Administrators Only forum. Semi-sensitive stuff is in the Mod/Admin Room and more forum-management stuff and stuff about the mods is in the Admins Only forum. If we had a smaller staff, the multiple forums wouldn't be necessary, but at some points in time, we have almost 20 Mods and Admins on our forum. |

Didn't know this one, thanks Richard. I think I will rethink my schema and go with a hidden category like you mention here. |

I see a lot of forums with Moderator Discussion areas that are not hidden but for selected members only. I don't think that's a good idea because it gives those with malicious intent a start for hacking and snooping. I strongly recommend member only areas to be hidden. |

I created a Private section with hidden forums for moderators, including a "Moderator's Corner" forum for message exchange, and a "Removed Topics" forum for moderators to transfer posts to rather than deleting them. Gave each moderator privileges to the Removed Topics forum so they could posts transfer in. Then, we collective decide what to do with the offender.
Since we started using the New Member Moderation Mod (first two posts must be moderated, then the member can post at will), the ocassion offensive post by interloper members has ceased to be much of a problem, and no one else even seemed to be affected.
I'm also about to create a chat room visible only to moderators and admins. |
--Jördan It's a wasted day if you don't spend at least part of it flying upside down. |

This is an excellent idea, jfitz... I like it. I'll consider doing something similar on my site. |
