Hi all, can someone tell me if there is a mod that helps in setting up a portal without too much of coding experience. I have setup snitz with some of the mods such as email all, admintools, event, poll newsletter and few others but now i want to make it more looking like a portal. i know i can download alwready made jobs like crush or serverhacker but i realy want to playabit myself that way i can pick and choose what i want. |

If you want to do a good job of creating a portal you really will need to have some code (ASP/vbScript) experieince or at least be prepared to learn a lot on the way :) If your willing to take your time and learn as you go, you'll probably have lots of fun doing it. |

start by learning ASP, either by reading a lot of snitz pages, or by looking in http://msdn.microsoft.com and then you'll make a portal by yourself. if you need specific help, post it in the MOD or general dev section |

I'd start by looking at what you expect from your portal. What functionality do you want it to have, and what should it not do? Then collect the necessary MODs and/or other codes while you make a design for the look. After that, it's "just" putting it all together. |

So I guess there's no Mod or something that would make the whole process a bit easier.
ok. ive got the site integration mod installed, that gives me an easy way to start, now say you want to have the poll for instance on the left page and the calendar as a small display under it, what would the code be. This will give me a start and hopefully help me work out the rest.

No real MOD's to make it easier that I can think of, Crash and Serverhackers and Huwr's portal's could be considered MOD's I guess, why not start with one of them ? |

I downloaded the Serverhacker portal and deleted (or rather, bypassed) the bits I didn't want right now. I think it is easier to do it by deleting rather than trying to add mods to the base code. Anyways, it's a good way to gain confidence in using ASP code and a great sense of achievement when something actually works. And it's low risk: if you modify the code too much and get a bit lost, you can always revert to the original files or your backups. |

I agree that a "pre-packaged" one is the way to start, if you're not a programmer. I'm "living-proof" that a non-programmer can implement one of these Snitz-based portals, with the outstanding support and patience provided by these folks. I've learned a bit of basic ASP and SQL syntax along the way, also -- which is one of my primary reasons for doing it. I looked at Huwr's, Crash's and MaxPortal (NOT recommended) at the time I did it, and selected Huwr's (Serverhacker's wasn't available at that time, so it wasn't an issue). I converted an Access database from an older forum and I've since updated to Huwr's v3.4 version.
It's been quite successful with my users, and Huw still answers my posts calling for help, so I guess I'm doing OK!
