Is it me or what?
I'm thinking - I love my basic snitz forum 3.4.03 and also think the MODS are great and want them on my site. However, if I start changing the code to the core snitz install I'm in trouble when the core snitz gets updated. I would no longer have a clean updatable snitz. Some of these MODS require serious changes to many of the snitz asp scripts, not to mention the database changes.

No, everyone faces the same risks, but the changes in dot-versions are usually fairly minor. This is a reason why some people are still on 3.3.x - the mod's they need just aren't on 3.4.x yet. |

I'd have to pretty much agree with you. Some mods are certainly not for the faint hearted either when installing them.
Snitz out of the box though has pretty much enough functionality to suit 90% of all users needs, I'd agree that just a couple more features in a standard install would be nice (IP Bans, Active Users & Private Messages) but then there will be 20 other people who can think of another 5 mods they think as critical as well.
The Devs have got the current version of Snitz though to a point where there is not likely to be many core updates before the next full release is made, so it should be a while before you need to worry about upgrades if you decide to install some mod yourself now. |

If you are careful and follow the mod instructions you reduce the risk. Sticking with the most popular mods by well known authors also helps reduce risks as far as conflicts and support go. As far as new versions of Snitz, the 3.4 version should hang on for a while before the next major upgrade. You'll have to face the same thing everyone who chooses to use mods must, and that is to decide when the new features outway the need to keep all your current mods. If you stick with the most popular mods then they will either be included with the next major release or be the first mods to get updated for it. Just stick with your modded forum until all the mods you really want to keep have been released for the new version. This is a good idea also because it gives time for the bugs to be worked out of the new versions of the code before you start running it. Everyone should learn enough coding to be able to add mods even if they don't understand their inner workings. You will need that ability to apply bug fixes, etc. to the snitz code too. |
