Anyone out there own one of these, or something similar.
Thinking about getting one as I'm sick of burning CD's to transfer 20mb of stuff between home and work all the time.
Are they any good? |

You find it handy I take it.
I've seen a 128mb USB2.0 one for about £65... so I'm tempted.. not a make I've heard of.. but then the only "name" I know is "Pendrive" guess they are all pretty similar

Yes, very handy. When you plug it in, it shows up just like another drive on your computer. |

The USB ones are pretty cool, but between my laptops I use Compact Flash cards - just treat it like a big floppy |

Yes, I've been using Compact Flash for a while on several different machines. The card readers cost about $20 each at Costco, and the cards themselves have really come down in price, too. If I remember correctly, the 128 mb is about $50.
The thumbthing sounds cool, though--no drive or driver necessary. |

The usbstick (www.usbstick.com) from freecom is excellent - 128Meg for £65ish plus VAT from novatech.co.uk. really rugged little beast, waterproof too :-). Some I've seen are more flimsy, but these are *fantastic* and I couldn't do without it!
(edited to add a bit)
I find mine useful as I'm an IT contractor/consultant - I keep a full toolkit including paint shop pro, xenu, web stress tool, source edit, winamp, vbscript reference chm, webproxy, opera, pgp, divX, some VB add-ins, my CV, my PGP keyrings etc on it, so I can visit a fresh machine and at least have some of my tools effectively ready for me to install without looking for downloads/cd's etc. It also leaves enough space to shunt those occasional 'bigger than a floppy smaller than a cd' files around. And it keeps my pgp keys totally safe as when I leave a site, my keys can all come with me :-) |

looks ok if a little bulky - what's all the 'docking station' business? I know the usbstick comes with a usb breakout cable which is handy to reach the back of the pc, so it may be the same deal. fwiw get the biggest you can afford as you'll find it soooo handy and always want the next size up . . . I'm going to wait for the 1G ones now to get a whole CD on!
may be worth thinking about the waterproofness as an added bonus of the usbstick as you'll end up keeping your life on one of these, and all the protection you can get is 'a good thing' imho. |

A colleague of mine from the UK was using the 512MB version when he was visiting. Now I want one too! He was able to move files from Win2k Japanese desktop to a Win2k English motebook and back to an old Japanese Win2k notebook without even fussing with drivers. I was skeptical at first, but it worked as advertised.
