Line 51 remove the ' from the front of the line
'strDBType = "access"
Line 57 again remove the ' and also insert the physical path to the database
'strConnString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=e:\***\****\***\snitz_forums_2000.mdb" '## MS Access 2000
This info is all detailed in the Readme File, look at step 4 and follow the instructions for an Access Database |

No skip the bits you've already done, start from Step 4 (the one after the one that tells you to unzip everything) of the readme |

Could someone explain this in something i would understand? "If your database folder is accessible from the web, upload the whereami.asp file to the folder where you are going to put your database. From your browser, type in the location to your whereami.asp file:"

It means if you intend placing your database in any folder other than root then you should also copy the whereami.asp file into that same folder and then run it.
This is all purely for example, lets say your website is www.wow.com, when you log into your site using FTP you will see a list of folders (directories), remember root is the top most directory so it might look like this
--> wow.com (what we've been calling the root folder)
|--> cgi-bin
|--> db
|--> myDatabase
|--> forum
Lets say you want to place the forum database into the 'myDatabase' folder. the URL for this would translate to www.wow.com/db/myDatabase - so if you copy your database & the whereami.asp file into that directory you can then go to www.wow.com/db/myDatabase/whereami.asp to find out the physical path to the database.
Why do you need the physical path ? Well becuase on most servers your not the only person using it, so webhosts create directories for each user, the actual directory on the PC (again using the example above) might be C:\Home\WebHosting\wow.com\ - the forums needs to know this information so it can find the database which is why whereami.asp has been included to help you find it out.

I have already tranceferd the whereami.asp over to the db folder by clicking the arrow pointing to the right, between the two screens. do i need to trancefer my snitz forum over there? |

Im starting to understand it a bit i think. You can look for what you want to trancefer across to my host account from the left hand screen and where i want to put it in the right hand screen. If thats correct i have two DB folders, one in the main (the root i think) its the first thing that comes up. From top to bottom db/log/special/www. If i go in the www i get another list of things, then i go in forum, and in there is a database folder. Do i put the snitz forum 2000 and the whereami.asp in that one or the first one? P.s. When it says put it in your browser, should it find it through that when i click search? P.p.s do i need to upload the whereami.asp thing into the forum folder on my C Drive? |

mirage, your server setup sounds like :
-db
-log
-special
-www
forum
db
If that is the case, I would recommend putting the mdb file in the 'top' db folder, and the rest of the forum files in www/forum Then change your config.asp where it has you strConnString set, so it 'points' to new proper db location.
Do you have ICQ ? (Or some other instant messenger chat?) It could be easier to chat in real-time (only problem then is being online at the same time), but you can have your new features setup, then learn from that. |

Sounds like your figuring it out mirage :) Go with what Laser suggested about the folders. Put your wherami.asp file in there also and you can then run it by typing www.yourdomainname.com/db/whereami.asp (thats the 'put it in your browser bit') |

  -db -log -special -www forum db This is correct, i have put all what you said in there and the rest of my forum is in the www folder. should i delete the old database from the www folder. Im gunna ask another stupid question. What do i use the FTP program for?. My guess is when i get new smillies and avatars and things like that, i upload them in the ftp program and thell work in my forum. Is that correct? Or i put them in my C drive and the FTP program will find them and make them work on my forum. Am i learning or just bodging my way through it?

Your getting there
Yes you can delete the old database from the www folder.
All an FTP program is used for is to transfer Files between one computer and another. It wont transfer things automatically for you though, when you get new icons etc you need to use the FTP program to copy them to your website. |

Where do i send the Avatars and Smillies? in the forum folder or the DB folder. Im thinking the forum folder. I have a whereami.asp in both DB folders and can only get to the one in the www folder? not sure about that one. my ICQ number is 117164014. |

Smilies would normally go in your forum directory, I personally use a separate folder for my Avatars but you could put them in the forum directory also. |

When you say you use a seperate folder, do yo mean in your forum folder or on your C drive , Or in your forum folder in your FTP program? Also sould i have a folder for Smillies and avatars. Do i need a folder in the FTP program side of it? If so how do i make a new folder in there? P.S. When i add a mod, and it says make some changes in the asp file. Do i do that in the folder on my C:. Or the forum folder in my FTP program? |
