Okay, this boggles the hell out of me. I have a folder titled Music_Software that I wish to rename to something else but every time I try I get this lovely bit of info:

There are NO files being access from this directory that I am aware of, I have full permissions to it and I can name any other folder in the same directory. The attributes are NOT set to READ ONLY as one may initially think either. It is not a shared or web shared folder, there are no scripts, services, active programs relying on this directory name remaining the same. Any ideas why this would be happening? |

Have you tried a reboot. I have a server that does this all the time with windows explorer if I try to delete directories that people are accessing. Even when they come out I can't delete and get this message until I reboot |

If a service or driver is using it, you can try to start in save mode. |

Kat, I've tried ALL the basic stuff, I gave myself exclusive permissions, rebooted, applied and reapplied attributes, ensured NO services/applications were dependent on it. It's kind of mind boggling now. I can rename any other directory in the same folder AND can rename any directory subordinate (child) to it.
I elect not to start up in Safe Mode because that will not resolve the issue I am having with it. I think I did fail to mention that this directory resides on a drive I slaved in but that should not matter whatsoever, especially since I can rename other directories and files on it. |

If you can do it in safe mode, you now a little bit more where to look :) http://sysinternals.com has a sniffer to find out what a program is using (directory, files, register) in the background. |

Could you copy the contents into a new directory and delete Music_Software? |

I thought of that but we're looking at 40 gigs worth of stuff, so I am electing to wait and do this as a last ditch effort. I am reviewing a pretty good program called Process Explorer that may lead me to what is going on. It seems promising that this may help...
