I'm working/designing/thinking about/trying to decide if it's worth it/etc, on a usergroup system. I'd like to assign different privileges to groups/users and am trying to come up with all the privileges that I can think of. Here's my list so far:
Move Forum Move Topic Assign Moderators Create Group Approve Group Members Approve Topic/Forum/Category Edit Topic/Forum/Category Delete Topic/Forum/Category Lock Topic/Forum/Category Creat Topic/Forum/Category View Forum/Topic/Category Cast Vote Make Poll Ban User View Poll Results *Assign Rights to Users
Any to add to this list?

In addition to approving group members, add/delete group members. Also a combined right "Group Manager" would help...

Yeah, I figure that the member structure would have to change to: 1) Board Admin 2) Board Moderator 3) Group Admin 4) Group Moderator 5) Group Member 6) General Member 7) Guest |

Were you planning on completing the UserGroup MOD that's been released?

Well, no one responded to my request for the location of a downloadable version of that mod. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to continue with that mod or just start over from scratch. From what I know of true user groups, we'll have to totally modify the forum code. I don't think the developers are going to want to do that, so I'm thinking about modifying it on my own...yeah, I know that'll take a long time, but I don't really think making this user groups thing an "add-on" is the way to go about it. The tricky part of it is integrating the user groups system without much or any performance loss. There will be more queries in order to get all the user privileges from the DB. We'll see. Depends on how much time I have in the next few weeks. School is begining to mount pressure on me, but I should be ok after this week's tests |

e3stone: I fully support your efforts and I just want to let you know that I think this is definitely the way to go. Unfortunately, you're correct in that it will involve much work, but once complete, it will substantially increase flexibility and it is in my opinion, the way it should have been done the first time.
Not sure if this is part of your grand plan, but I would like to see User Groups in that I can assign a member to a group. The groups would function as users in that I would be able to assign a group specific rights, or allow a group access to a forum or set of forums, etc. That way, I can have a hidden/member list forum with one group in the access list. When I want to allow a new member access, I just add them to the group. Eg: "Visiting Moderators". All members of the group would get a special title, would be allowed access to a set of forums, and would have mod rights in certain places. Instead of adding each user individually to each item, just add the group and add the members to the group. |
