Can be distributed in a mod without restrictions? It would need to be compatible with the 4.x browsers and up. Not looking for anything really fancy or complex.

I want to do something similiar to what serverhacker has done for his navigation here:
http://www.serverhacker.com/

<!-- ULTIMATE DROPDOWN MENU v3.6.2 by Brothercake -->
<!-- http://www.brothercake.com/dropdown/ -->

However, the terms of use would prevent this from being included in a mod.

quote:
Terms of use
http://www.brothercake.com/dropdown/terms.php?license=free

2. You may not use the script on commercial websites.

3 .You may not redistribute, sell, or offer it for download, in any form or on any medium, whether for profit or not, without my express written permission.

I really like the menu system here:
http://www.milonic.co.uk/menu

However there are restrictions for it's use and can't be re-distributed (like in a mod). I don't want to include anything in a mod that might get someone in trouble because they didn't know they might have to purchase a license to use it.

If anyone knows of any or has a link to something that could be used freely by anyone (public, private or commercial) and be redistributed, I'd appreciate it. I'm thinking if worse comes to worse, I'll try using Dreamweaver and see if I can use it to write something.

Thanks in advance.

BTW...been to dynamicdrive and looked through it, but it's either not what I'm looking for or there are restrictions.

see above as to why... (I was busy editing )

Plus there are likely a lot of companies who use Snitz or sites that are borderline so I'd like to use something that wouldn't get anyone in trouble if they used it.

okay, I am biased but I am going to recommend it anyway. I believe without a doubt that the CoolMenus Project over at http://www.dhtmlcentral.com is the best by far. Extremely configurable and cross browser compatibile.

http://www.dhtmlcentral.com/projects/coolmenus/?m=10

there are many samples and varied configurations to this menu and I believe you'll find it coded very well.

Thanks dayve. I'll have to take a look at it when I get home. I'm sure there's a lot of stuff out there that I haven't seen - that's why I asked.

It's time to go home so I can go do Snitz stuff. Unless I happen to hit one of the many game icons on my desktop, then forget it.

Not sure who it belongs to as can't download the file. inside the 'employ' zip is a menu which may be distributable and suit the needs.

I appreciate the links.

I've already seen the first two and they weren't viable options.

Tigra Menu
Their page reads:
Currently unsupported by Tigra Menu browsers are:
Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0;
Netscape Communicator 4.51, 4.7

Brainjar's DHTML Menu
This one looked really sweet. I really wanted to use it, but when I checked it out in Netscape 4, it was very bad. None of the text was visible, only black and grey bars (or something like that).

I have to support Netscape 4, otherwise I'll never hear the end of it from the designer on the team.

You can find a bunch of dhtml-menus at http://www.dynamicdrive.com . I especially like the HV Menu there.

We're using the HV Menu on The Writer, but it's a bit slow in loading. Don't get me wrong, it's a very nice script. It's nice having all the options for customizing, but I really want something simpler and lighter.

So far, I think the CoolMenu Projects script appears to be the best candidate. It also comes with an asp script for building menus directly from the database.

BTW, I wrote an asp script for building menus out of a database for the HV Menu if anyone needs one.

I haven't noticed that it loads slow, not yet, anyway. But thanks for letting me know that.

I'd be interested in that. Would you like to send it by email or will you make it available as a download?

Dayve's right, Coolmenus are the best I've found so far. You can see my coolmenu implementation at www.visimation.com Coolmenus verison 4 uses CSS, and is highly configurable.

robbear7 has some free Dreamweaver templates he's distributing with cross-browser DHTML menus: http://www.robbear7.com/designer/template/microsite.htm

Another site to check out (although they make similar restrictions on non-commercial distribution), is http://webfx.eae.net/ These two guys do some amazing stuff with DHTML.

I've used some of the menu scripts here before... very cool stuff... but only works in IE. Even though Netscape and Opera are not as popular, I firmly believe in cross browser coding which is why I recommended http://www.dhtmlcentral.com The main objective there is great DHTML coding that works on all popular platforms (OS and Browser types). I assure you that you will find the coding at this site to be top notch.

Dayve,

I would just like to throw out here that my DHTML menu's work in Opera, NN6+ and Mozilla. NN4 degrades nicely, and in some cases no degration is nessesary. But then again, they are designed in Dreamweaver and best suited for projects within Dreamweaver.
