Well, I just had YAProblemWithMyWebHost. I was installing a MOD, and went to give a subdirectory write permissions, and suddenly, my whole forum stopped working.

In trying to get it back up and working, I found that I could only get it to work if I check the radio button "Script" under Permissions. In other words, I seem to need to allow script in order to make things work.

Here's more or less what I saw:

Permissions:

O None
O Script

The reason I'm posting here now is that I didn't have to check this button when I first uploaded Snitz, but now I do. I'm wondering whether there's something wrong and I've just solved the problem with a work-around.

Can't risk the security, you know.

Of course, I've contacted my web host (three or four times), but they don't know (as we say in English) their *** from their elbow.

Thanks in advance to all those great people who keep Snitz a world-class BB, especially "o Rui, que as vezes parece saber tudo de tudo!!" (Rui, who at times seems to know everything about everything!!)

First, there are two kinds of permissions, the underlying file permissions and IIS web permissions, and whichever is most restrictive wins. You use windows explorer and the security tab to view or change the underlying OS file permissions. You use the IIS service manager, Frontpage, or another web tool to view or change the IIS permissions.

In answer to your question, yes asp pages require script execute IIS permissions. Your asp pages won't run without this permission.

Thanks, Doug, for your answer and explanation.

I wish Interland reps were trained by you. Seriously. The first guy I called said, and I quote, "Man, what did you do? Your site is really screwed up." I felt as if I were being reprimanded like a naughty child, even though I hadn't done anything so bad.

I had only changed permissions for one subdirectory. When I went back to undo what I'd done, the damage remained. I was very frustrated, and called back twice. I couldn't get any response. Frustrated again.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again--Snitz really spoils people; or better, Snitz represents what support should or could be.
