I'm running win2k server SP3 with IIS 5.

My web services are running fine, and up until now I've just run html files. Now I want to put up Snitz message boards which uses asp.

When I open the local .asp page in my browser I get the following error:

Server Application Error
The server has encountered an error while loading an application during the processing of your request. Please refer to the event log for more detail information. Please contact the server administrator for assistance.

I have script and execute permissions set in IIS as well as the IUSR_Ryan account for this particular folder.

I checked out the event viewer log for more information and I found two logs being generated:

----1st log:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: W3SVC
Event Category: None
Event ID: 36
Date: 8/21/2002
Time: 8:33:03 AM
User: N/A
Computer: RYAN
Description:
The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/4/Root/forum'. The error was 'General access denied error
'.
For additional information specific to this message please visit the Microsoft Online Support site located at: http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

----2nd log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10001
Date: 8/20/2002
Time: 10:34:56 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: RYAN
Description:
Unable to start a DCOM Server: {99169CB1-A707-11D0-989D-00C04FD919C1} as ./IWAM_RYAN. The error:
"Access is denied. "
Happened while starting this command:
C:\WINNT\System32\dllhost.exe /Processid:{3D14228D-FBE1-11D0-995D-00C04FD919C1}

I am guessing this is related to the ASP application, but I don't know enough about what it is. Apparantly the IWAM account is trying to start a program it doesn't have permissions for in order to run the ASP file.

I did a search in the Windows help for the DCOM server, and I learned how to pull up the DCOM Config Properties. All my programs were listed there, and I saw that the I_WAM account as the rights to launch new applications. I don't know if this is related or not.

I also re-ran the IIS Lockdown utility, suggestion from reading another thread, with unchecking all the services that were to be disabled. I hope that reenabled them.

I have also confirmed under the "Application Settings" in the IIS MMC that "Scripts and Executables" are enabled. There is also a mapping for the .asp to C:\WINNT\System32\inetsrv\asp.dll under the properties button in the App mapping tab.

Furthermore, I have Perl installed and am able to run .pl files and perl scripts, but not ASP apps.

I am still having the same problem when trying to view a local ASP page. How do I enable IIS to run ASP apps? Anyone have any suggestions or ideas or have seen this before?

Thanks!
-Ryan

Just throwing out some ideas, maybe I'm lucky and it helps :-)

Check the "Properties" of the "Default Web Site". There is a tab called "Home Directory". Bottom part is called "Application Settings". When you click on configuration, check that there is a connection for the .asp files. It should be linked to a asp.dll in the inetsrv directory.

Also make sure that the Execute Permissions are set to at least "Scripts only".

After that, right click on your forum directory and select Properties there as well. Make sure the Execute Permissions are set there as well.

Good luck !

Check the context of your admin account also, this I think appears to be a security issue (or account issues)

If you shutdown the server and restart, does this fix the problem?

Check your error at iisfaq.com also

I found the exact answer on that website you referred me to! Thanks!!! Here is the exact URL with solution:

http://iisfaq.com/default.asp?View=A463&P=

Following the above steps, I did not need to run that vbs script after all since my machine fell into a different category. The problem was that I reset the permissions on my machine wanting to make it more secure, but I was unaware that the IUSR and IWAM needed access to certain directories in Winnt and system32. I only gave them permission to the web folders.

I ended up following the instructions in the MS KB(there was a link to it on the page) instead of his instructions since they were simpler.

Thanks again for the help.
