I have a Question. I Have Snitz installed with some mods, Im experiancing a problem with CPU Usage maxing out at 100% for long periods of time which stalls and crashes the server. The server was rebuilt 3 times, hardware checked, etc.
The techs are saying it's a runaway asp script. I only run 1 huge site that does 180 GB Bandwidth a month and only uses snitz and mods.
I am thinking it is the time zone adjustment from one of the Mods. We have only 80 people max in the forums at one time and the puter is a 1.8 GHZ, pentium III 512 GB RAM rnning off a full capabilities.
Is anyone having problems or have you guys heard of any issues. I do believe it is one of the mods but not sure which one.
I have file library, active users, themes (my area) private messanger, and time zone setting.
Your opinion is greatly appreciated.

Only!!?? I am not sure if this is your problem, but Access cannot handle 80 people at once. I had a pretty optimized page using GetRows and every trick I could find on the net and the most I could handle was 30-40 concurrent users..
With that many people it may be time to upgrade to MS SQL or MySQl (price being your deciding factor) |

I do have SQL Server but according to techs, with the amount of Bandwidth and resources used elsewhere, I would have to upgrade the RAM as SQL needs 512 to operate smoothly. SQL Server is a future alternative some day.
As far as access is concerned. There are many conflicting reports I have heard. Microsoft doesn't want to seem to make it public and many people have asked that same question! How many concurrant users can access handle! I have heard that it can handle alot, I have heard it can't handle that many! I have heard that all users would have to hit submit at the same exact time. Thats a whole new subject! One that I for sure do not and have not been able to get a definate answer to.

Thanks for the feedback. Ya, I made active users only available to admin staff.
I did find out something that may be the problem. I have a total of 5 databases (all access) running two large sites and I would say that all 5 are called at once most of the time.
I am going to eliminate all databases except the forums and move 1 of the 2 big sites to another server and see if that solves my resource problems.
I'm still up for comments regarding this if anyone has any knowledge in this area.

I was noticing a large spike every time someone loaded the default.asp. After doing a lot of digging, I found a post where someone said they disabled Topic Moderation and it fixed a lot of their problems. I did this and saw my page timer drop from 7.5 secs to 1.5 secs to load. Turn off Topic moderation if you don't use it and that will help. But definately, you gotta get rid of access and move up to SQL or mysql.. Access just can handle more that 10 or so concurrent users before you see a big performance hit. |
Have fun and be good!!

Not sure if this applicable - I want to "upgrade" from Access to MySql cause it hates multi-users (and the idea of a forum is for lots of people!) but can't afford to. I found Scriptoria for MySQL from bunkerhill which suggests it can migrate from Access to MySQL. Haven't tried it as don't have time or money and have heard nothing else about it - might be worth a look. Or not if someone knows different |

Just an Update.
I have fixed the issues or at least have control over them. I had 4 Databases running and handling the web site, most of which was added with the forums and one of the databases was over 100 MB.
I removed all the databases except for snitz.
Also I turned off subscriptions, topic moderation and made active users only available to admins.
Thanks for everyone who has responded. It sure did help!
ruirib, according to my techs at the co-location where the servers are leased. I do have the latest MDAC and Jet service pack.
I Guess It Seems that Access can't handle 4 databases being called all at once.
We are looking into getting an SQL Server and Placing it on it's own Machine soon. |

Its not, but I'll answer you anyway. I recommend using DBTools. I used to go from access to MySQL and it has been a lifesaver.
find it at http://www.dbtools.com.br |

If you mean for a large number of users, that's probably right. My own site has 5 or 6 DBs (can't remember exactly now) and it works perfectly. However I get around 30-50 visitors a day. |

Well, the site gets up to 80 Visits constantly. I am not sure, The CPU hasnt hit 100% and crashed IIS since I removed them. Could also have been a bad asp script out of what I removed also. |
