Yes, this is kinda long... broken into two parts. If you use/plan to use the Anonymous MOD, you might find this interesting.

OKay-- so i installed the Anonymous MOD by Davio
(http://www.dsilvera.com/v33/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=33)

over my current forum code. I setup it up, according to instructions. Everything seemed to work except:

I could not change the status from Anonymous "on" to "off". The changes would not stick. I went and looked in FORUM_CONFIG_NEW in my SQL server, and all the anonymous values were set to 0. hmmm...

I setup another user account, and went to set that up as the anonymous account (as per instructions), but in the pull-down list (Normal,Moderator, Admin) there was no "Anonymous" option as stated in the instructions. Looking around the code, it looks like the field in the database would be set to 4... so I edit the SQL database manually-- set the mlevel to 4, but to no avail.

So, I decided to start fresh. I deleted the forum, deleted the database, and started over.

I downloaded the "Anonymous" forum (3.3.3), then unzipped it. I then downloaded the patch (anonymous_update.zip), and unzipped that, overwriting the files when prompted.

I modified the config.asp file: unchecked the Microsoft SQL server option, and unchecked the appropriate connection string. Modified the string to connect to my SQL server database.

I created an empty database on my SQL server.

I hit /mysite/forum/setup.asp?RC=5, and setup the database. Success. The tables were created.

I hit the default.asp, and CRASH:

error '80020009'
Exception occurred.
/neverforget/forum/inc_functions.asp, line 46

So, anyone have any experience getting this thing working? Following the instructions, outta the box, it doesn't work for me.

Before you throw out the usual answers, lemme step you through some logic:

  • The database connection string is correct, otherwise it couldn't have created the tables.

  • The login name is correct, since the tables were created successfully. (login=sa)

So, if anyone has some ideas, let me know. Through this process, I hope to become an expert with this MOD, and help others down the road on their path to anonymous snitz forums.

I have answered my own question... but hope this is helpful to those trying to setup this mod:

I started looking at what files were being updated by the anonymous_update.asp, and inc_functions.asp was one of them. So, I pulled the inc_functions.asp from the davio_packged_forum.zip, and viola! It works.

Note: The forum still crashes until you login as admin, go to the MOD section, and install all the MODS listed there.

Wow!: The anonymous part works! So if you install this MOD, start fresh. If you need to save your threads, (if you are running SQL server 7/2k) then do a data objects transfer to your new database after doing a fresh install.

You could have avoided some of those problems. I have the setup files for SQL and MySQL databases so running the setup.asp file would have setup the fields needed for the mod.

You might ask why I didn't include it in the zip file. I haven't gotten around to updating the mod. It still needs a lot of tweaking and bug fixing which I will fix when I update it.

Also can you change the link in your post to this: http://www.dsilvera.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=33

The /v33 link is a virutal directory to the /forum folder which i will be removing soon. And a lot of users will be clicking on the link.
