I am having trouble with the enterprise manager:
I am running Windows XP. I log on to my remote server and get a connection but on trying to enter the folder with my database instaled EM just hangs and and stops responding.
Has anyone had similar woes.

How many databases are on the remote server? I have this same problem connecting to SQL Servers that have over 1000 databases on them. It just takes a little while to tranfer the information. You can use Access 2000 (or 2002) as a frontend to your SQL Database too. You specify the exact database name so it goes straight to your database instead of having to load all of the ones on the server for you to pick from.

Like Huw's stated Enterprise Manager can be pretty slow over the internet, give it pleanty of time before giving up, 1-2 minutes wouldn't be unusal for a response from EM on a server with many databases.

If you do think theres a problem then try logging in with Query Analyser instead, if that seems to be working fine then it is most likely just a case of a slow repnse time in EM.

One one SQL Server I work on it will take it 4 mins to load and it says the program stoped responding but if you just go make a sandwich or have a smoke then it will come up. I will login the SQL Server and then play for awhile on the computer with other windows open up onto of it

Try using MS Access to connect to your SQL Database, or maybe this program with help (web-based EM)...

I have found both ways easier to use over the wire than EM.
