I'm doing something kind of simple. To have multiple sites, instead of creating separate tables, I'm using a siteid for the categories. The benefit is very nice. Sharing members is always something people like to do around here. That's obviously not unique to my solution. One is that I can share categories across sites. Most forums have misc forums that people like to just chat in. Since I will still have the same members, I figure they dont' want to always have to run across sites to check each topic they're chatting in. Now they don't. Not only that, it introduces people to each other who might only post on one specific site, and now might flock to the other (I'm very much about building loyal communities). Another benefit is usually mods. The only one I have a use for that will work nicely is the Active Users. It should work perfectly, and if someone's in a specific category, I'll probably say what "site" they're on. The only drawback might be someone going from site to site where active topics won't really say the last time they were logged on. I have yet to test it. One trip may be ok, but if they wait too long to go from one site to another, they may have to browse a little more then one click to see what's changed.
Anyway, I've found that the only pages I've needed to change so far are default, active, and search. Can anyone who's followed my babble think of any other page I may need to change, because nothing's really hit me yet and I can't believe that it might have worked so fast.
Just a note, this is not a mod I plan on releasing as I'm not really building any web interface to control this, but just manually editing my database as necessary. I did think it would be nice to share the idea though. I'll answer what I can, but can make no promises
