Here's an idea. What if someone created a mod that kept track of Points rather than Posts. Participants could get points for various activities and get ranked accordingly with the same stars and titles. For example...
-1 point for each day to login and visit the forum -2 points for each new topic -1 point for each reply -2 points for creating a poll if poll mod installed -1 point for sending a private message if installed -etc
This one point per post thing is killing me. I've been on this forum for a year and a half and I just hit 200 posts this week, I think. I'm a regular, don't get me wrong. Mainly, the idea came from seeing other communities award points for other things than just message board posts.

I have done something similar with a site I have been working on, although it doesn't replace the postcount, mebers get awarded points for various things like uploading/reviewing files etc
When the site is up and running, I will post a link and explain more about it.

woow, very nice idea.
http://www.wowwebdesigns.com also has such a feature. You get several awards for your activity in the site.
