Made some changes to send_to_friend.asp.

Rather than just sending a default message plus link. It now grabs the topic and replies and send them in the email.
(In hopes of bringing/enticing more people to the boards)

Download:

Demo: (of course click on "Send to Friend")

The only problem I would find with this one is that if the topic is HUGE, that would be a VERY long email and might annoy some people...plus if the whole topic is printed, why would I necessarily want to go to the board. Maybe if someone sent me a number of topics, but one won't do it for me. Just having the link would pique my curiousity and make me want to visit.

Perhaps there could be a checkbox to decide which to send? I'll look at that in a bit.

Possibly an easy solution for this would be a "view only this message" option which would show only the individual post rather than the entire topic. Then add an icon similar to "Edit Post".

This could also be handy in that it gives users the ability to view / print a single message.

Man I need a bigger piggy bank! These 2 cents are adding up everywhere <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> Don't get me wrong, these discussions just make the features better in the end!!! SO keep those 2 cents coming!

I agree! Might be a good idea to limit it to the first 10 or 20 replies. and then a link which says to view the entire duscussion go to (link to topic)

I disagree with this for a couple reasons. First I get a ton of email that says "Someone thought you wanted to see this... Visit this page by clicking here" Typically I am dissapointed. But when I get something with some content, I can decide if it interests me or not. I find that giving people more options to decide (and more control of what and how they see things) makes people happier in the end and hopefully long time members and visitors to the site.

Second, six times in the past two weeks I received complaints about spam. People quickly jumping to the conclusion that the site admins were blindly sending out email to increase traffic to the forums (primamrily do to all the free refer a friend sites out there). After talking with all these people, they all told me that if there were more content in the email, they wouldn't have thought it spam. Granted this will not satisfy everyone but the fewer people I have to apologize to and explain that if they look in the email they will see the member name and email address of the person who sent it, the less work and stress on my end <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

Actually it would be pretty easy to make this an option in the admin panel to send the original email or send an email with topic and replies!

OK, how about a compromise? Send them a "I thought you'd be interested in this conversation. The topic started out like this....." and then just include the original topic. Then add something like "to read the rest of the topic, click here"

That should satisfy everyone. It provides enough information to prevent people from thinking it's spam, but it's short enough to pique most peoples curiousity.

Here's 2 more cents for ya....
