Hi all,
This message is divided in 3 parts.
<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle> <b>PSD templates</b> to create your "standard" buttons.
In the zip you will find 4 psd files to be used with Photoshop 6.
Version 6 is needed because it keeps layers as text and gives you the chance to add filters on it.
Every layer is named with an LCID and there is also a Grafic layer if you don't want to use words on the button.
Fonts used are "more or less" the same as official buttons (Times New Roman, Arial, Arial Narrow, Wingdings and Webdings) so that everyone with Windows OS can modify them easily.
<b>Quick Reference:</b><ul><li>rightclick on a level name and choose duplicate level</li><li>give a new name (LCID code is better but is up to you)</li><li>Hide all the other layers but the Background and the newly created</li><li>Choose the text tool (big T) and highlight the text</li><li>Type in the translated word</li><li>From Image menu choose Mode and Indexed</li><li>Flag the "Trasparence" and click OK</li><li>At the warning click Yes</li><li>In the menu file choose Save as</li><li>Change the kind of file to Compuserve GIF and rename the file with your LCID</li><li>Save and you are done </li></ul>

In every italian translation I've found (even before v4b) a lot of words were left in english as choice.
But not always normal users can understand the meaning of "TOPIC" or words like that.
That's why I've started my own translation that is beeing tested by more or less 20 users.
Mainly TUTTI I FORUM (board) contains CATEGORIE (categories); CATEGORIE are divided in FORUM and inside every forum you can have different DISCUSSIONI (topic);
When you post you write a MESSAGGIO (post) in a DISCUSSIONE.
Anyway to use it is easier than to describe it...
Date and Time format will not be implemented 'till the final release.

You have an old translation? You are tired of file comparing to see what are the new variables?
Don't worry: now with the Translations Manager you can easyly import langXXXX.asp files into a stand-alone DB and compare the
translations with the one existing in the DB.
You have the chance to compare value by value, decide to update modified variables, insert new records for the missing variables
and dynamically create new COLUMNS for different LCIDS....
And so?
Well, once done you can export them to a new langXXXX.as_ and move it to your official Test Forum :)=
<b>Important Notes:</b>
<ul>
<li>It is a very very very very beta version (0.01b) so please be careful</li>
<li>Variables provided in the DB are from the official release of the v40b03 file</li>
<li>Date and Time Format variables are not present but the manager will (should) work even with the final release</li>
<li><b>Work off-line and in a separeted directory</b>: A lot of posts asked to include translations in a db table... not a wise idea at all and using this tool you should realize why </li>
<li><b>Double-check</b> output files before using them</li>
<li>I know I have a kinda messy way of coding, sorry bout that but will try to improve the code layout and above all the variables use in the next release</li></ul>

<b>Things to be done:</b>
<ul><li>Add direct translation functionality</li>
<li>Add spell check functionality (in testing, Office .dic files work greate but is a bit stressing for the PC)</li>

<li>Add default values in the export process (i.e. missing italian translation for that value will be replaced by the english translation)</li>
<li>Give a nicer look at the pages</li>
<li>Have a date with Cindy Crawford</li></ul>

Also when I opened the templates, Photoshop 6.0 found missing fonts and replaced them when I tried to edit the text.
I'm not sure, but maybe we will leave the font choice to the translator. They have to try for the best fitting font. Your PSD files will ease the production off course.

Yes this will help (didn't look into it yet). Thus I'll not comment on the functionality of it.
Till now I would use this method:
1) Keep the previous version in dir FORUM-1
2) Expand new version into dir FORUM-2
3) Copy my current language pack in forum-2 dir
4) Use WINMERGE (http://winmerge.sourceforge.net) to compare forum-1\Lang1033.asp with forum-2\Lang1033.asp
5) Also open forum-2\Lang1033.asp AND forum-2\LangNNNN.asp (i.e. my language file forum-2\Lang1055.asp for Turkish) in my Editor.
6) Locate the differences from Winmerge (the variable names will show you what they are)
7) Switch to editor, find that variable in Lang1033.asp, copy it, find the insertion place in Lang1055.asp and insert it.
8) Translate the new string
9) Repeat 6-8 until all are done.
Yes it's very cumbersome. Such a tool will help a lot when it's finished.

You are correct, the mistake came from the default charset assumed by explorer when a charset is not specified by a META tag.
Here it is how to proceed with a non roman charset:
The font used in the PSD templates wasn't exactly a Timens New Roman but a bold variation, now the PSD are correct and, as far as I can see, Turkish charset is supported by Times New Roman
For other languages I agree that we should live the font choice to the translator to fit to the needed charset.
Here is an example of the login template used with a chineese language (choosen font that supports the charset is Simsun
That comes from this code:
<META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=CN-GB">
<FONT FACE="Simsun">½øÈë
In this message you should see something that looks like 1/20Ee
but, if you copy and paste this code and preview it under explorer AND you have installed support for asiatic fonts (available from Windows Update) you will see that looks like the Chineese Login Gif.
I hope this helps in keeping a good standard for buttons gif sets.

PS: I've looked for directions in developing MODS that support v.4.0xxx forums (i.e. multilanguage MODS) but there are no topics about it, but only directions in the config.asp and LangMODS.asp...is there anything more than this or it is still too early?

Yeah sure, but at that time I didn't have w2k installed, just w98  . But also not all font's support unicode...
