While finishing up school I'm doing web design for individuals and working as a waiter at a restaurant...well, the other night my manager was complaining about having to write the server schedules...she still does it by hand on a big paper grid with names down the left and days of the week at the top... sooo, the lightbulb started flickering in my brain and I decided to look into writing her a web-based automated schedule maker. It seemed like it would be fairly straight forward until I started thinking about all the parameters that go into making the schedule.
Here's a little background on what parameters there are:
1) Everynight there's a server called a "shift-lead." There are only 5 (this number may go up or down in the future) servers who can be shift-lead, but we have to have one and only one everynight.
2) Each night there is a shift-lead, Level III, Two Level II's, and Two Level I servers.
Basically, I'm looking to write a function that would randomly assign a server to a shift for each day of the week, but also basing the chances of them getting assigned to a particular shift on how many shift they already have. i.e. I don't want to get assigned to a shift if I already have 5 and Nancy only has 2.
hmm, I don't know if anyone will understand what I'm looking for. I guess I just need to sit down and think about it a little more.
Thanks

My first suggestion is to search google for scheduling apps, there are many already done.
I wrote one once a couple years ago in VB and for me anyway it wasn't a totally easy application to get right. The app I did had leader, team members with titles, and also had to schedule equipment along with the people.
If you can find something close already done, it may be the solution.
