I've got a pretty robust set of mods that went into the original asp-dev forums... before I heard of Snitz!

So the options are:

1- Add my changes to Snitz, but then if an upgrade comes out, the new code overwrites mine...

2- Add my changes to Snitz, and hope everyone else adds them... (I like this option because we all benefit).

3- Stick to my OLD code, and try to beef it up to catch up with all the nice Snitz features... (It could take a while)

4- Tell the Snitz community what my features are, and see if people are already working on adding them.

Well here are a few of the ones I've done.

To see them go to my test server: www.HowardSternOnline.Com

1. User Icons: 60x60 pixel images that show up next to each post, and at the top showing that you are logged in.

2. Mark Forum Read: Each forum has a "Mark Forum Read" button, when the user hits that button a timstamp record is generated or updated showing the last time that user read the forum and finished reading, not just a single date showing the last visit to the entire board. This way the individual forums can be read at any time, and the "NEW" indicators will be accurate for each forum.

3. Reply to SPECIFIC posts: A record showing who the user is responding to, and which post (makes following a response easier).

These are a few of the big ones. Visit the test site to see them in action.

with snitz forums, as soon as you close the browser, everything is marked read after you visit the forums, so not really that much point in adding it, unless you keep the same browser window open all day.

I recommend writing up the code to fit the snitz forums, and have a vote on it :P

Fez...

We've made the first steps to your ICON features... I know the plan isn't exactly what you have (a picture at the top of the page) but it is planed to make an admin option to show the icons by the post of the poster, under their name and data.

the second: Mark Forum Read is a new one to me... I need to hear more... but if John is wanting to endorse the concept... it's up for very strong consideration <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

the third: it is planned to have a "limited threaded" option implimentation... with the admin option to do one of three things: Flat File, Threaded or allow the user to pick. In implimenting this feature, it will require modifications that associate replies to other replies in some capacity... and this shouldn't be all that hard...

either way... any modifications are on delay for at the very minimum of a month. The code needs to be documented... and have some kind of manual for new users to get involved with the product. Those of us that have been here since the beginning have a solid grasp of the product, of what it can do... and how to handle it with great grace and ease... and we've kept the doors open to new members at all times... and this has helped us to keep the product sane... becaus we have to keep it in line with what people realy need... and not what a few people want : ) (this isn't aimed at you at all, and is more of a general stateemnt of WE NEED to DOcumenT)

If my answeres up above didn't answer you in full... please ask for further input :)

I've spliced some of my HowardSternOnline.Com features into a Snitz forum for AfterHoursBBS.Com.

After Hours BBS has been running for over 14 years... from an original dial-up to it's current Snitz incarnation. Ed the Sysop has a true love for BBSing and understands the BBS user more than just about anyone you will ever meet.

The Mark Read function became a turning point in the decision to use Snitz code. If I hadn't assured him it would be possible to add it, he never would've made the move. To truly understand the power and flexibility of that function, visit the site, register, and visit some forums. The mark read function is only available if you log in, so give it a try.

Each forum has it's own last read timestamp. If you leave the site, and re-visit it hours later, it doesn't assume all forums are marked read (as the cookie system used by most BBS software do), instead each forum is independent. If you have more than a few forums, it makes a world of diffence. Another nice thing about this method is that if you move from computer to computer, you don't rely on a cookie to mark your turf.

To see it in it's raw (asp-dev) roots, visit HowardSternOnline.Com, to see it in Snitz code, visit AfterHoursBBS.Com.
