Davio I dont mean to put down your current banning mod but I think the following Idea would be a hell of alot easier then banning members by IP. Ok I know this website that uses a banning system based on cookies. The things that is so special about this system their using is that no matter what kind of IP you have Static or Dynamic once you are banned you are banned. With your BAN MOD Davio, users can disconnect from their ISP, connect again, then sign up for an all new account thus giving them access to your site again. Now this website you cannot get back in unless you delete the cookie and I speak for most newbies "some arent that smart". See I guess it works like this.. Every member that signs up has a cookie stored on their computer, wether or not they choose to be automatically logged in everytime they visit the site (much like snitz). Well I guess that Admin can press a BANN button located next to the member name, when that button is pressed, I guess it restricts that cookie from the website. That member will not be able to access the site unless he's smart enought to delete the cookie. Oh well its just a thought, but I think you should seriously consider this in your next release of your BAN MOD

I delete all cookies on my computer everyday. It's also easy to disallow cookies all together. |

Well, banning users by ips is just used as a deterant, not a solution to the problem. I knew the downfall of banning users that are on a dialup connection, but users still wanted the ability to ban by ips. Using this mod along with other preventive methods will eventually stop problematic users on your forum. But thanks for the suggestion. I might consider adding that option along with banning the users ip address.

there is no definative way i know of to stop users from getting to your site, i think the current IP mod is more effective than a cookie based one, like richard, myself and so many others empty cookies regularly so the person would be back in again.
How do other forum apps ban users, is it strictly by usernames or do they use IP banning? stuart.

Other message boards I use and administrate ban users by ip address, but they also say it's not a definite science. Just a deterant.

I like Davio's way of banning by IP because alot of the people who may want to do malicious things and create havoc to your forum (if they were smart enough) would connect through a 3rd party Proxy Server as to mask their IP Address.
Banning these Proxy Servers IP Address would ultimately lead to him/her revealing their real IP Address some point in time if they still wanted to come to the forum.
Like Davio and stuF said about cookies, I can be in the forum, clear my cookies without closing my browser, do a Refresh and be able to log back in within seconds, but ultimately both ideas together would be a benefit.
