I am at wits end. I've tried everything and nothing seems to get my forum working. I have been caught by the dreaded...

Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005'

Operation must use an updateable query.

/forum/inc_functions.asp, line 644

... error and I can't seem to get it fixed. From what I have read on the list it is a sharing error. I had the forum working and went to the site to tighten some of the security and hit the "Tighten for Frontpage Extensions" option. I should have known better but it was like a big red button that I had to hit.

I don't know whether this caused my problem or not but when I go to the forum I get the error above. I have set permissions to read/write and enabled executables. I have even deleted the domain and recreated it. No luck.

Does anyone have any ideas? I could really use a break. Thanks.

When I login as admin I can use all of the features and even see a list of the users. It seems like the only page that is not working is the one I care most about and that is the public pages.

Thanks,
Malcolm

Your error is usually caused by incorrect permissions. The user account for anonymous web access (usually IUSR_computername on NT or 2K servers) must have read/write/change access granted to the .mdb file and the folder holding it.

Use windows explorer to change the security settings.

Search the forum here for more info.

I don't know that your comments told me anything that I had not read before but for some unexplained reason when you said them they did the trick.

I did that exact same changes as I did yesterday and somehow your comments and a new day made a world of difference.

Thanks,
Malcolm

Ah, what the heck. Let's blame success on the comments, not the new day
