Hi, i would like to be able to send a private message to guests, it would just be asking them to register ... it would have to work with IPs i think because the members who dont use cookies would get annoyed if they got it everytime they visit... It would have to work for every unregistered guest that visits the forum, but only appear once to them, no matter how many times they come back.... i ohpe someone can help, cheers, stuart.

Stuart,
Unfortunately I don't know exactly how well this would work out. There are some ISPs out there ( AOL for example ) where a user ( be it guest or not ) will receive numerous IPs as they browse the net. So, if you had someone that was a guest on AOL, they would receive X number of PMs depending on how many times their IP changed while they were browsing your forums.
Secondly, you must remember there are many MANY people out there on dial-up services that do not have static IPs. This causes a problem similar to that above.
It's just something to think about, but instead of a PM ( as the PM service itself it not available to a guest unless modified ) use some alert that pops up only 1 or 2 times asking them to register or a little line of text at the top of the page saying something to the effect of "Please join XXXXXX forums and enjoy all the benefits of being a member".

the notorious AOL problem which has bugged my active users mod for weekS! *lol* yeah, gonig to have to do some rethinking... perhaps a login required, with guest not having to add a p-word, and giving the guest account a PM, and doing at each login...?

Stuf,
I have fixed the problem with the AOL IP thing ( as long as they are registered ), check the Mod Help forum for a thread titled something like "Ack! users listed 3 times."
